ABEOKUTA—The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, yesterday declared that he is confident that the matriarch of the Awolowo family, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, is resting with the Lord.
Adeboye, who spoke while holding a private prayer session with the family inside their Ikenne country home, said: “By the special grace of God and because of my interaction with Mama, I have no doubt at all that she is in heaven now.” <!–more–>

Pastor Adeboye, who shared his experience with the audience on how he was privileged to confirm that Mama was resting in heaven, explained that he had a personal encounter with her two weeks before her death.
He said: “Before Mama passed on, she was making a request and I was contacted. I won’t go into details about the request but I was abroad and when I came back I saw her and we had a little discussion before she passed away. As a result of that I have no doubt that Mama is resting with the Lord.”
Meanwhile, the Ogun State governorship candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, in the last general elections, Prince Rotimi Paseda, has described the late matriarch of the Awolowo family, Hannah Idowu Dideolu and her late husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as exceptional leaders who stood for the cause of the masses

YOU might think that you have nothing to worry about when it comes to cyber security. But you are probably wrong. According to a recent survey, 95 percent of networks have been breached. 66 percent of those are not even aware of the network breach.
It isn’t enough to gape in disbelief. Here are some measures you put in place to ensure a safer network for your organization or business.
Look to the cloud <!–more–>
Clouds have privacy and security controls to ensure that only the people you want to access your data are able to. Moving components onto third-party clouds could actually provide added resilience against events such as local power loss at sites.
Many clouds are backed up at multiple locations, meaning that if one of the provider’s servers goes down your data will still be available from somewhere else.
Be sure to use a reliable service provider with good history. also, let your provider know what data you would like deleted after a certain period of time.
Fortify hardware and software
It pays to have reliable anti-virus software on your organisation’s computers. Go a step further in updating your anti-virus and other software regularly.
You should also be careful about the kind of software you install on your computer so that you don’t open up the door for malware and other malicious activities. Also, work with your IT team to ensure that your hardware is secure as well.
Back up regularly
Imagine what would happen if you lost all your data? Keep that imagination in mind until you have backed up your data in multiple secure locations. Don’t procrastinate, do it now, and do it often.
Train your staff
It won’t do you any good if you’re the only one who cares about securing your network. Get experts to train your staff often on habits they need to imbibe to ensure cyber security.
Money, money, money
Don’t always go for the cheap stuff. Speak with your CTO or head of IT on how to make reasonable investments to secure your network. Sometimes a trusted third party company who has data security as its core might be a better option for you. Weigh all your options before making a decision.

Online is the  convenient way to do business. Many people will testify of the capacity of online ads to provide access to customers at a cheaper quicker, rate. One of such is Mr. Femi Oriowo, a business developer and an avid OLX user who says he has not only sold over 500 items on the platform but also secured his current job through OLX.
“I heard about OLX on the radio in late 2013,” Oriowo told Glamtech, “I have been using the platform since then. It has been such a wonderful experience;  I have been able to sell over 500 items including phones and electronics on the platform.” <!–more–>
The catch for him is the speed at which he gets things sold on the platform.  “The fact that there are no middle men involved allows me to increase my profit margin considerably,” he added. Oriowo said the platform also gave him the right networking opportunities to move his career forward.  His words: “Earlier this year, I met someone who bought a laptop from me, we later became friends and now I am the Business Developer Manager in his company, the opportunities with OLX are endless.”
With the high unemployment rate amongst Nigerian youths, Oriowo believes that young people can comfortably earn a decent side-income by selling on OLX starting with little capital. He said: “It’s a good way to start-up the ladder to being self- employed and self-reliant. OLX gives you the exposure you need to get your goods sold, provides excellent user support and what’s more, it’s free. You also get to develop and hone your entrepreneurial skills.”
Doing business online is not without its challenges, one of which is the issue of security, but Oriowo believes the company is doing its best to ensure that transactions on its platform are becoming more and more secure. “OLX, like every other online marketplace has had its share of invasion from unscrupulous elements called scammers; but with the safety measures recently being implemented, scamming on OLX is sure to become a thing of the past,” he concluded.

7 dogs attack driver in Lagos

Akpomose,Akpomose, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had gone to the area with his wife to visit his in-law, Mr. Christian Peter, when the dogs pounced on him.

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Saturday Akpomose, narrowly escaped death last Saturday, after he was attacked by seven dogs at Ajah area of Lagos State. The timely intervention of residents and passers-by saved the driver from the dogs. <!–more–>
Vanguard gathered that the dogs, owned by a Navy Captain, were being taken out to ease themselves at a nearby uncompleted building, when they saw Akpomose and pounced on him.
The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Division, which referred Akpomose to the General Hospital at Akodo, for immediate treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

His story
When Vanguard visited the victim in the hospital, he said: “My wife and I went to visit my in-law on Sunday. He lives at Okun Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area. Later, on Tuesday morning, I just strolled out of the compound and came across the dogs.
“As I stepped out, I saw a security man coming out with several dogs. They were very huge Alsatian dogs. I was terrified when I saw them and as I tried to go back in, they overpowered the man holding them.
“As I bent down to pick a stone and scare them away, they pounced on me and that was all I knew. They bit me in almost all parts of my body. As I screamed, some residents came out and tried to scare away the dogs with sticks.
“My screams even woke up my in-law who was asleep in the house. At a time, I became weak and unconscious and it was the people who rushed me to the hospital.”

Dogs’ owner intervenes
When Vanguard visited the residence of the dogs’ owner, the Chief Security Officer attached to the building, who identified himself simply as Victor, said: “Immediately I got back home, I explained his condition to my boss who directed me to see his family and take a decision on how to transfer the victim to his own private hospital for proper medical attention.
“We have bought all the drugs they asked us to buy. We are showing the receipt to you just to let you know that we care about the victim.”

ILORIN — The convoy of the wife of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hajia Aisha Buhari  was yesterday attacked by suspected hoodlums in Ilorin, Kwara State.

State chairman of the party, Alhaji Ishola Balogun Fulani, said this at a press conference last night in Ilorin and fingered a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Mrs. Buhari was in the company of the wife of the vice-presidential candidate, Mrs Oludolapo Osinbajo; Kwara State First Lady, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed and wife of the immediate past governor of Kwara State, Mrs Oluwatoyin Saraki among others on the way to a women sensitization programme in Ilorin.
According to Fulani, “a worrisome development took place today( yesterday) during the visit of Hajia Aisha Buhari, the wife of the APC presidential candidate as her convoy was attacked at the Film House along Emir’s Road, Ilorin. About 10 vehicles were vandalized.”
He recalled that APC had repeatedly reported to the police  and other security agencies about the plan by the PDP to cause violence before, during and after the forthcoming general elections.
He thus called on the police and other security agencies in the state to be alert and call the PDP in the state to order.
Contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Salihu Garba confirmed the development assuring that the command  would investigate the incident.

NSA, Microsoft team up to tackle cybercrime in Nigeria

Worried with the increasing cybercrime causing more economic harm than good in Nigeria, platforms and productivity services giant, Microsoft Nigeria has joined forces with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and other industry stakeholders, to tackle the ugly trend.
With over N159 billion lost by Nigerians through online scam and identity theft between 2000 and 2013 as well as 2,175 websites defaced within the same period, in a cybersecurity capacity building workshop organised last week in Abuja between Microsoft and NSA, participants agreed that there was need for education and awareness intervention for security and law enforcement and other ICT regulatory agencies in Nigeria for enhancing the security of the country’s cyberspace so as to checkmate cybercrime promptly.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the National Security Adviser, Major Babagana Monguno, represented by Barrister. Isaac Idu, Director of Internal Security in the office said, “The cyberspace virtual global domain while dismantling barriers to commerce, is increasingly transforming our economy and security posture, creating opportunities for innovations and the means to improve general welfare of the citizens.
Since cybersecurity had taken the dimension of global phenomena which requires concerted efforts of both the private and public strategy to tame it, Major Monguno expressed happiness that Microsoft as a key partner is aligning itself with ONSA to provide a secure online space in the country as part of efforts to ensure security strategy to secure the cyber space.
Reiterating that the workshop was part of government’s renewed measures towards safeguarding the nation’s presence in cyberspace and ensuring protection of the national critical information infrastructure, Monguno explained that the Federal Government was determined to confront the threats in the Nigerian cyberspace, uphold and support the openness of the cyberspace as well as balance security with respect to privacy and fundamental rights.
In his address, the Managing Director, Microsoft Nigeria, Mr. Kabelo Makwane said the partnership on the cybersecurity capacity building workshop was borne out of the desire to support ONSA, Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies ( MDAs), to grow capacity with respect to global approaches to national cybersecurity strategy, addressing cybersecurity risks through amongst others computer emergency response Team (CERT) management, security and privacy of data in the cloud, cybersecurity forensics and audit skills, global policy and legal developments, cloud computing and its benefits, growing local data hosting capabilities, in line with the new Nigerian cybercrime law, the Cybercrime Act 2015.
According to Makwane, ONSA’s National Cybersecurity Strategy (NCSS) closely aligns with Microsoft’s ambition to provide a safe, secure and resilient online environment.

For the Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Mr. Peter Jack, the agency had established the NITDA’s cert.NG centre to police the cyberspace.
He added that the agency is constantly involved in critical role in capacity building through the agency’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) centres established in 2014, adding, “We are also concerned and have started the Child Online Campaign. We believe strongly in multi stakeholders strategy, as we have worked closely with ONSA in formulating the national cyber-security policy formulation and documents”.
According to him, NITDA has also concluded plans to collaborate with ONSA to develop a framework aimed at addressing child online abuse in the country.
He said: “We wait eagerly to call all the stakeholders to have the Cybercrime Council inaugurated and then we can make progress.”
Noting that the time had come for multi-stakeholder’s strategy to combat all forms of cybercrimes and identity theft, Jack disclosed that of the 2,175 websites that had been defaced, 585 were actually government websites.
Meanwhile, conscious of the diversity of implications of the nation’s risk exposure in cyberspace, the Federal Government as a matter of urgency had put in place cohesive measures towards addressing the emerging risks effectively.
Development of the Nigeria’s National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy documents; Establishment of the Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act 2015; Establishment of the National Cyber Monitoring Centre, i.e. the Nigeria’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) Operation Center; Establishment of National Computer Forensics Lab for cybercrime investigations by all security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies and Establishment of effective collaboration mechanism with international cybersecurity organizations across the globe, among other are some of the measures put in place by the government to tackle the menace of cybercrime.

Do  you take a roll in the hay every night, once or twice a week, monthly or at no particular time? For the good of your own relationship, how much sex should you be having? On the whole, the average couple is happy if it thinks it’s getting more sex than the couple next door regardless of how much it’s actually getting.
Having more sex than your neighbours can actually make you happy, and research shows that couples who have sex at least two to three times a month are more likely to report a higher level of happiness than those who who’ve had no sex during the previous 12 months.
The more sex people have, the happier they tend to be, even when factors like income, marital status, health and age are taken into account.
What is more surprising is that even people who have reasonable amounts of sex report lower levels of happiness if they think there is a chance they could be having less sex than their peers.
Conversely, people who think they are getting more sex than their peers report higher levels of happiness, even if — in the great scheme of things— they aren’t having that much sex.
How much is normal?
This sounds like a simple question, but there are no right answers. What happens when a couple has what is called mismatched libidos? If she likes to have sex four times a week and he only once or twice, of course they want to find out who is the abnormal one.

Sexless marriages
Generally speaking, a sexless marriage is one in which a committed couple has sex less than 10 times per year. About 1 in five couples fall into this category.

Don’t be embarrassed and don’t panic! What is probably happening is that having sex in the missionary position is pressing on your bladder, forcing you to let go.
The answer is simple— don’t have sex in that position. Tell your man it stimulates you in the wrong way (which is perfectly true, although not in the way he might think!) and you’d prefer other positions.
When you’ve been going out for long, and are more relaxed with him, you can admit the truth if you like. For now, just avoid the problem.

How facebook ended 11-year old marriage

Ado-Ekiti- An Ado Ekiti Customary Court Friday dissolved an eleven-year-old marriage as result of facebook adultery.
In his judgment,  Joseph Ogunsemi held that it was clear from the available evidence before the jury that both parties are living apart, the union has broken down irretrievably.
The eleven year old union between a businessman, Muyiwa Owolabi (42) and his wife, Tinuola (40) had been undergoing a turbulence period when the wife became addicted to her serial boyfriends on facebook.
online-datingMuyiwa had filed a petition before the court accusing Tinuola of serial adultery and sexual escapades through the social media.
Tendering evidences to substantiate his claim, Muyiwa also accused her of lack of care for their two children, Folajimi (11) and Timilehin (7).
Muyiwa accused the respondent of using social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to connect with different men with whom she eloped. He tendered computer generated evidences of her conversation with lovers urging the court to dissolve the union.
A Nokia C3 phone with which the respondent was alleged to be communicating with her lovers was also tendered alongside printouts of pictures and text messages exchanged with the men in question.
But Tinuola, who denied any amorous relationship with the men she was alleged to be going out with, told the court that  Muyiwa was in the habit of beating, and starving her,  alleging that he seized her phone on “mere suspicion.”
She also told the court that the petitioner was not in good terms with her family urging the court to dissolve the union.
The court held that the issue of adultery was overwhelming given the evidence tendered by the petitioner.
On the issue of custody of the children, the court granted Muyiwa custody holding that from evidence adduced by the petitioner, he was adjudged to be in a better position to take care of the two children.
Citing Section 21 (1) of the Customary law of Ekiti State, Ogunsemi said the court is duty-bound to examine evidence of who would take care of the children better among the two parties most especially if the child(ren) in contention is/are yet to reach the age of eighteen.
The court also ruled that the respondent (Tinuola) cannot be denied access to the children as they will be free to spend part of their holidays with her while the petitioner must be put on notice.
In concluding the judgment, Ogunsemi held that any of the parties dissatisfied with the court verdict is free to file an appeal within 30 days of delivery of the judgment.

“It’s actually a funny one. It was when I saw a guy that looked like my friend whom I haven’t seen for many years. I was so excited that I ran to hug him, but when he turned and faced me, it dawn on me that I had embarrassed myself because he wasn’t the person. Then it was too late. I have already hugged him,” she reminisced.
The rising actress who recently starred in a wave-making TV series “ Lies and Secrets” claimed being ignorant of the prevailing sexual harassment in the industry, insisting that “as I speak with you, I haven’t experienced it.” Talking about her ideal man, Iruobe said, “he must be a guy with a clean cut beards, sweet body, excellent style and one that possesses a sense of humor.

The question is: When last did you give your wife a complete ‘MOT’, just as often as you do that priced car(s) of yours?

What brought on this thought-provoking poser is the recent experience Linda confessed she was elated she had. She just turned 40, but said sadly,she couldn’t remember the last time her husband made proper love to her.
“After almost 14 years of marriage” she continued, “I’d put on some weight especially when I had our fourth child. Dare, my husband, had gone bald and the most exciting thing we did was share the occasional take-away treats with the kids. Sex was virtually non-existent, just a quickie every other week.
“I was at a classmate’s 40th birthday party when a friend I hadn’t seen for years looked shocked to see me. ‘Why have you put on so much weight?’ She squealed, ‘you used to be a stunner. What happened to you?’
I felt a bit embarrassed. I had put on quite a lot of weight alright, what with the huge meals I shared with Dare, and scoffing the kids’ often left-overs so food wouldn’t be wasted. But did she have to be that blunt? Her criticism stayed with me for days. Friends I saw regularly couldn’t be as outspoken as she was for fear of hurting my feelings.
Thanks to her, I took a good look at myself in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. I vowed to give myself a health over-haul before my birthday. So, I ditched all the stodgy food and cut down on the portions I eat.
I also started taking the staircase to my fourth floor office. At first it was hard but by the time my birthday loomed, the improvement was awesome. My critic of a friend had even visited, bringing me some cosmetic stuffs to ‘tone’ my skin and I’d bought lots more. Thanks to her, I now looked a million-dollars!
‘Only whenever I asked Dare how I looked, he’d just glowered and muttered ‘nice’ without even taking a proper look at me. I knew I looked and felt fantastic. If he didn’t appreciate the way I looked, maybe someone else would. A few days after my well-attended 40th birthday party, a friend invited me to a party.
Her elder brother just had a son after two girls and he was throwing the bash to ‘wet’ the head of the baby. His wife was still abroad and I reckoned it would be a ‘let it all hang out’ party now the cat was away. I didn’t let on to Dare that the wife was still expected or he might want to come to keep me in check.
As it was, he was super-glued to Super Sports, on the telly, drooling at the games. When I was dressed and ready to go, he was too relieved to be left alone to get on with his fun. But he really looked startled when he saw my outfit.
I quickly left to join my friend who was impatiently hooting the car horn and I had conveniently forgot to put on my wedding ring. A wedding ring is always a dampener if you want to have fun. Men would just assume you’re either single, divorced or widowed!
“The party was a lively one and in my group was this cocky television journalist happily controlling the flow of the conversation. I challenged his views from time to time and he took notice of me, with his eyes roaming all over my body. I flirted right back—it felt great to have a man’s attention after all these years of grumpy Dare.
When he asked me to dance, I jumped at the offer. We swayed slowly to the haunting music, our hips locked together with my body pressing into his firm chest. He was tall and in his 30s, and I was loving every minute with this hunk. My friend was watching with a big smile on her face—as if she was taking the credit for who I’d now turned out to be.
I was now slightly tipsy and as my hand rested on his tight bum, he pulled me closer to him and an electric shock went through me. His name was Ade and after we finished dancing, he got a bottle of wine and we talked some more.

Boko Haram jihadists killed 16 civilians in an attack this week on a southeast Niger village, near the Nigerian border, a local official said Saturday. “On July 15, Boko Haram elements fired on locals who were praying in a village near the town of Bosso,” said Bako Mamadou, mayor of Bosso, a town in southeast Niger on the border with Nigeria, where the armed Islamist group originated.
“They killed 15 people on the spot and another person succumbed later to their wounds,” Mamadou said on state television. According to the Bosso mayor, four others were injured in the attack. Meanwhile the Niger army said Saturday it had killed 32 Boko Haram fighters from July 15-17 during “sweeping up” operations following the July 15 attack by “Boko Haram elements”.
The defence ministry added that three Islamist fighters were taken into custody, adding that Chadian soldiers also took part in the operation. Nigeria and Niger, along with Chad and Cameroon, have launched a joint offensive to end Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency, which has claimed at least 15,000 lives and caused about 1.5 million people to flee their homes.
There has been a recent spate of Boko Haram attacks in Niger’s southeast Diffa region following weeks of relative calm. The upsurge in attacks on civilians comes after the four-nation coalition pushed the militants out of territory they had seized in northeast Nigeria.

Boko Haram Islamists attacked Chadian soldiers on Tuesday, killing 11 and wounding 13 in a raid near Lake Chad, a Chadian security source has said.
The source said 17 Boko Haram fighters also died in the fighting following the pre-dawn strike.
“Boko Haram members attacked our positions at 4:30 am (0330 GMT) in Kaiga Ngouboua about two kilometres (about a mile) from the Nigerian border,” the source said.

“This surprise attack claimed the lives of 11 soldiers and wounded 13 (and) 17 Boko Haram fighters were killed.”
“The attackers were pushed back and the army is continuing search operations in the zone.”
Chad has joined a regional military alliance, alongside Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria, to fight Boko Haram, which has waged a bloody insurgency since 2009 marked by mass abductions, village massacres and suicide bombings by women and teenagers.
At least 17,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million made homeless since the Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009.

Pope Francis on Thursday urged the world to act quickly to prevent “extraordinary” climate change from destroying the planet and said wealthy countries must bear responsibility for creating the problem and for solving it. In a radically worded letter addressed to every person on the planet, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics blames human greed for the critical situation “Our Sister, mother Earth” now finds itself in.

“This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her,” he writes in his long-anticipated Encyclical on the environment.
Arguing that environmental damage is intimately linked to global inequality, he goes on to say that doomsday predictions can no longer be dismissed and that: “The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”
Green activists hailed the charismatic Argentinian pontiff’s widely-trailed intervention as a potential game-changer in the debate over what causes global warming and how to reverse it. “Everyone, whether religious or secular, can and must respond to this clarion call for bold urgent action,”said Kumi Naido, the International Executive Director of Greenpeace.
Environmentalists hope the pope’s message will significantly increase the pressure for binding restrictions on carbon emissions to be agreed at global talks in Paris at the end of this year. But even before the official publication, climate change sceptics had dismissed the document’s argument that the phenomenon is primarily man-made and that humanity can reverse it through lifestyle changes including an early phasing-out of fossil fuels.
“I don’t get economic policy from my bishops or my cardinal or my pope,” US presidential candidate Jeb Bush said on the eve of the release in comments that underlined the depth of opposition in the United States to a binding agreement to curb greenhouse gases.

– Fast track to disaster –

The Encyclical references the arguments of the sceptics by acknowledging that volcanic activity, variation in the earth’s movements and the solar cycle are factors in climate change. But it maintains that “most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases released mainly as a result of human activity”.

And it leaves no doubt that Francis believes the world is on a fast-track to disaster after decades of inaction. “If present trends continue, this century may well witness extraordinary climate change and an unprecedented destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences for all of us,” he writes.
Bemoaning the “remarkable” weakness of political responses to this, Francis accuses the sceptics of cynically ignoring or manipulating the scientific evidence. “There are too many special interests, and economic interests easily end up trumping the common good and manipulating information so that their own plans will not be affected,” he writes.
“We know how unsustainable is the behaviour of those who constantly consume and destroy, while others are not yet able to live in a way worthy of their human dignity,” he adds, saying the time has come for parts of the world to accept decreased growth.

– Conflict and war –

The consequences of climate change, he argues, will include a rise in sea levels that will directly threaten the quarter of the world’s population that lives near or on coastlines, and will be felt most acutely by developing countries. Highlighting warnings that acute water shortages could arise within decades, he writes that, “the control of water by large multinational business may become a major source of conflict in this century”.
He adds: “It is foreseeable that, once certain resources have been depleted, the scene will be set for new wars,” with the ever-present risk that nuclear or biological weapons could be used. One of the strongest themes in the encyclical is that rich countries must accept responsibility for having caused climate change and should “help pay this debt” by cutting their carbon emissions and helping the developing world adopt sustainable forms of energy generation.
“The land of the southern poor is rich and mostly unpolluted, yet access to ownership of goods and resources for meeting vital needs is inhibited by a system of commercial relations and ownership which is structurally perverse,” the pope writes in perhaps the most radical passage of the document.
Francis says fossil fuel-based technology needs to be “progressively replaced without delay.” Developing countries will need financial help to do this from “countries which have experienced great growth at the cost of the ongoing pollution of the planet” and this pact has to be enshrined in binding accords.

Soldiers nab 15 Delta youths allegedly on protest

UGHELLI—SOLDIERS have intercepted about 15 youths of Ndokwa ethnic nationality in Delta State who were going for a peaceful protest against an oil company at Ase Omoku community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.
They accused the youths accosted at Ashaka of planning to raze the Independent Power Plant, IPP, project in Okpai.
A source, however, said that the soldiers found no dangerous weapons on the youths when they searched them.
Among those arrested were Nnamdi Uwai, Onowoma Dickson, Nnamdi Community, Valentine Uyabeme, Ijeegbunem Obi, Kelvin Nwadele, Kanayo Kukagha, Agriga Ossai, Dinma Kukaya, Nelson Mabeme, Chidi and Uche Mabeme.
Leader of the Coalition of Ndokwa Youth Leaders, Mr Alex Agha, who confirmed the arrest of the youths said, “They explained to the soldiers that they had no business with IPP and their mission was to Ase Omoku, where they were going for a peaceful protest, yet they were arrested.”
He said other members of the coalition who were earlier stopped by soldiers from going to Ase Omoku proceeded to Umuseti community, the headquarters of the oil firm, Sterling Global, to lodge their grievances and were received by the Base Manager of the company, Mr Mohan.
A source at the 222 Battalion, Agbarha-Otor, in Ughelli North Local Government Area, confirmed the arrest of the youths, but alleged that a youth leader sponsored them to disrupt activities of oil companies in the area and extort money for personal benefit.
He told one of our reporters that the military handed over the youths to the Police Area Command, Ughelli.

KOGI 2015: Confluence of commotions

EVER since the release of election timetable for the Kogi governorship polls, aspirants of different political parties traversed the length and breadth of the state, scavenging for the golden votes of the electorates. From issues to vitriol and garrulous campaign, the election, no doubt, lived up to expectations.
apc kogiBookmakers had tipped the All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as the stars of the contest. They are. But they failed to take the shine of the smaller parties in the race with the Labour Party, LP and Progressive People’s Alliance, PPA showing great potentials for the future. They campaigned as hard as the two major parties to engrave their ideals in the minds of Kogi voters.
Few days to the election, the major parties started throwing allegations of attempts at manipulating the process against one another. A handful of violent incidents were recorded and the atmosphere was charged ahead of a landmark election that would define the intent of the people of the state. As the election was under way, the then governorship candidate of the APC, late Prince Abubakar Audu expressed confidence in winning the polls, with his running mate, Hon. Abiodun Faleke sharing a similar sentiment at his Ekinrin Adde country home.
But the running mate to the PDP candidate and the Deputy Governor of the state, Arc. Abayomi Awoniyi, accused the APC of trying to rig the election. He called on the electorate and security agents to be vigilant enough to thwart the antics of “anti-democratic elements that are out to silence the voice of the masses”.
As results started trickling in, it became obvious that the APC was in the lead in majority of the local councils in the state. Areas that were hitherto the stronghold of the PDP were lost to the APC in a keenly contested election. Such councils include Kabba/Bunu and Igalamela/Odolu.
The cancellation of 91 polling units with over 49,000 votes momentarily paused the celebration of the APC. But hours later, the shocker surfaced: Prince Abubakar Audu died. And a melodrama was kicked off. A prophet promised to raise Audu from death, sparking wild celebration in Lokoja, the state capital. At that time, Kogi was going through an inconclusive election and an “uncertain” death.
The revelation by an unnamed member of the late politician’s family to the effect that their benefactor was poisoned by a “top political figure from the South West” threw up a twist in the already confused situation. Who killed Audu? To gain what? How did it happen? There were more questions than answers.
Then came the legal quagmire
As the dust of Audu’s death was settling down, the feathers of our constitution were ruffled by the unpreparedness of our law books for what is fast getting popular as the Audu Scenario. The constitution and the electoral law take care of death or withdrawal of a candidate before or after the conclusion of an election. They never envisaged the death of a candidate before the conclusion of a voting process.
Analysts are of the view that had the election results been declared and a winner emerged, his or her deputy would have been the beneficiary of the Audu Scenario.
The death of Audu opened old wounds emanating from the acrimonious primary that threw up the late politician in the first place. Despite the high wire intrigues against Prince Audu, he still emerged as the governorship candidate of the party. Like the cat with nine lives, the late Audu also survived the report of a high-power committee headed by Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, to look into the propriety of his candidacy. The committee recommended that the late politician be stripped off the party’s ticket for failure to comply with the guidelines governing the primaries. He would have been many times lucky but for death.
Since the demise of Audu, many legal opinions have emerged. While many favour the continuation of the polls with Audu’s running mate, Faleke, other informed legal opinion faulted the arrangement on the ground that Faleke didn’t go through any primary election.
In the course of the scrabble for the shoes of Audu, many names were thrown up, including but not limited to Isah Jibrin Echocho, a former Afribank chief, Mohammed Audu, the first son of Prince Abubakar Audu and Alhaji Yahaya Bello, a multimillionaire business mogul from Okene Local Council of the state.
The ethnic jingoism that had characterized the state from inception reared its ugly head again with the three major ethnic groups in the state laying claims to the governorship ticket. While Kogi West was building a wall of interest around Faleke on the ground that he holds a joint ticket with the late Prince Audu, Kogi Central leaders have quickly closed ranks behind one of their own, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, on the ground that the transport czar came second in the party’s governorship primaries. The largest ethnic group of the tripod, the Igala people are making a case that Audu can only be replaced by another Igala.
As the contest creeps to the climax, the APC may settle for Bello, to be under a safe legal canopy. But the PDP is also believed to be doing everything legally possible to thwart the conduct of the supplementary election slated for December 5, 2015.
PDP believes that the election had already been won and lost, owing to the sudden demise of the candidate that had dragged the contest to a supplementary stage. The supplementary polls may need more legal supplements to hold as the PPA and the Democratic People’s Party, DPP are already in court to challenge the decision of INEC to go on with the polls.
However it goes, interesting times lie ahead in the Kogi scenario.

ACCORDING TO DAILY SUN LERATO Chaka’s love for her family could not protect her from brutal death. Her husband, Sipho Mothwa, allegedly killed the 32-year-old in a jealous rage on Tuesday evening in their house in Carousel View in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. He then allegedly dragged her body into the spare room before going to sleep in their bedroom. On Wednesday morning he called community leader Jane Mhlongo and allegedly confessed. He has not been seen since then. Mhlongo told Daily Sun that Mothwa told her to call the police. Lerato’s mum, Sinah, said: “That man was jealous and did not even want my daughter to leave the house,” she said. Temba police spokesman Constable Herman Moremi said a case of murder had been opened and the suspect was on the run. Anyone with information on Sipho Mothwa’s whereabouts should contact the Temba police at 012 717 9000.

XOLANI Dube accompanied his sister to fetch her boyfriend on Wednesday. They ran into a group of men who allegedly demanded a gun from him. The 19-year-old told them he did not have a gun. That is when they threatened to teach him a lesson. The young man did not take them seriously. Then, while Xolani, from Lindelani, was boozing with his friends they burst into his shack and allegedly shot him dead. A friend (24) of Xolani’s who asked not to be named said the men demanded a gun from Xolani. He claims they searched his friend and found nothing. Earlier, when Xolani’s sister intervened, the men let him go. “But when we were at Xolani’s shack, boozing, we suddenly saw people pushing the door open,” said the young man. “They started firing shots at him. One bullet struck him in the head. “We rushed Xolani to hospital by car, but he died on the way. Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that Ntuzuma cops were investigating a murder case. “The motive for the killing is still unknown and no arrest has yet been made,” said Zwane

French international soccer player Lassana Diarra, who played in his nation’s match against Germany that was at the centre of the Paris attacks, has confirmed that his cousin was one of the victims. Diarra played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Portmouth in the English Premier League.

This was one of the decisions the leaders took after a two-day meeting in Lagos, yesterday, sources at the meeting told Vanguard. The leaders, including Ohanaeze President-General, Chief Gary Enwo Igariwey; Professor George Obiozor; Second Republic politician, Chief Guy Ikokwu; National Secretary, Ohanaeze Youths, Okwu Nnabuike among others, when asked their view on Biafra, declined comments until the end of the consultations “in a few days.”

Ohanaeze consults on Biafra, outlaws Eze Ndi Igbo in diaspora It was gathered that given the sensitivity of the Biafra matter, Ohanaeze leaders have commenced consultations with prominent Igbo leaders on how to have a common stand on the issue. Said the source: “Ohanaeze and some statesmen in Igbo land are being circumspect. But I can tell you that they are not on the same page on this sensitive matter. The good thing is that they want the country restructured in line with the recommendations of the National Confab. “The South-East deserves an equitable share in this country, but as things are today, the zone is obviously marginalised. That is what those boys are protesting for. They want a country where every region will be treated fairly. I can assure you that Ndigbo will speak with one voice on the issue in a matter of days.” In the interim, Ohanaeze Ndigbo outlawed the crowing of Eze Ndigbo outside Igboland, warning that no Igbo leader in diaspora should flaunt himself as a traditional ruler. The group said at a forum jointly convened by the Igbo-speaking Community Lagos State, Aka Ikenga, Otu Okaiwu and Ndigbo Lagos to address the controversies surrounding the existence of Eze Igbo in diaspora. A communiqué signed by Igariwey; National Secretary of Ohanaeze Youth Wing, Mr. Okwu Nnabuike and other Igbo leaders in attendance, warned that any Eze found violating the order on the crowning of Eze Ndi-Igbo would be sanctioned. The statement read in part: “Under the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo on November 15, 2015, it was agreed that the crowning of Eze Ndi-Igbo outside Igbo land is hereby prohibited until the final regulation and pronouncement by the apex body of Ndi Igbo leadership. “None of the Ezes has any right whatsoever to use the appellations of the title: His Royal Majesty, His Royal Highness, His Highness and His Imperial Majesty. None of the Ezes has any right whatsoever to use such titles on their complimentary cards and signboards.” Our people want to remain together — Buhari Speaking at the launching of the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem at the Presidential Villa, Buhari said: “Today’s occasion reminds us of the need to appreciate the noble contributions of our fallen heroes who paid the supreme sacrifice to maintain national and international peace and security. “Our nation has recently celebrated 55 years of political independence and continues to remain as one indivisible entity despite several grievous challenges. Since independence, Nigeria has witnessed a lot of internal strife, survived a civil war and has remained united. “This feat achieved by the country is an eloquent testimony to the determination of our citizens to remain as one people. The sacrifices of our fallen heroes, heroines, and veterans who rose up to the security challenges cannot go unnoticed. Pro-Biafra group protest in Umuahia, Nnamdi Kanu’s home town Pro-Biafra protesters, yesterday, carried their “release Nnamdi-Kanu” protest to Umuahia and the home town of Nnamdi Kanu, marching through the major streets of the city under the watch of security agents. The protesters, who are members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and MASSOB demanded the release of the promoter of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged anti-Nigerian Government comments on Radio Biafra. The march in Umuahia was part of the threat by the pro-Biafra groups to take the protest to all the states of the South-East before going to Abuja, if Kanu was not released. However, economic and social activities were not disrupted as offices, markets and shops remained open as residents went about their normal businesses. Numbering about 500, the protesters peacefully marched through Isi Court in Umuahia South Local Council, through Aba and Umuwaya, Bende and Enugu roads. They marched around the city carrying the portrait of Kanu and the Biafran flag while chanting songs of freedom. Meanwhile, before the arrival of the protesters, a combined team of security agencies including police, army and civil defence had mounted surveillance at strategic locations in the city like the Government House and Isi Gate even as convoy of heavily armed security personnel patrolled the city with armoured personnel carrier. Earlier, before the protesters surfaced, Abia Government had said in a radio announcement that it received disturbing reports that some people under the aegis of MASSOB had planned to disrupt the peace of Umuahia on Monday, and alleged that it was being sponsored by an unnamed politician. Signed by the new Information Commissioner, Comrade Bonnie Iwuoha, the government said: “While appreciating the rights of citizens to air their views in a democracy, government will not condone lawless acts that could impede the progress of the State.” Release Kanu, Ibeku monarchs urge FG Traditional rulers from Ibeku Ancient Kingdom have appealed to the Federal Government to release one of their subjects, Nnamdi Kanu. According to the traditional rulers, their appeal was based on the fact that Kanu has the right to express his views in a democratic environment. The Ibeku monarchs who spoke through the chairman of their umbrella union of Ibeku Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Henry Ezekwe, expressed worry that they could lose an illustrious son like Nnmadi Kanu if nothing is done urgently, saying Kanu has not committed any extraordinary offence to warrant his long incarceration and warned that if any harm befalls him, they would react appropriately. The monarch lamented that the clan had lost prominent men in the past such as General Aguiyi Ironsi, saying they would not want to lose Prince Nnamdi Kanu. In their contribution, Eze John Ibezim and Eze Chiabu Emelike urged President Buhari to listen to the demands of the agitators and international best practices on such issues instead of resorting to use of force against them. The traditional rulers called on the President to address issues of marginalization and neglect which are some of the things the pro-Biafra groups are complaining about. I’ll be alive to actualize Biafra —Uwazuruike Leader of MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, charged members of the movement to remain steadfast and focused in the revolutionary struggle, saying the non-violence method adopted by MASSOB had become a source of worry to the so-called northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and the Nigerian military. Uwazuruike insisted that there was no going back in his bid to actualize Biafra now or never, stressing that he is in the struggle for freedom not for any other person but for his own children who he said desire a free country where their lives and property can be guaranteed for security. The MASSOB leader, who spoke through the Deputy National Director for Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, weekend, at a special meeting of Enugu West Senatorial District, in Nachi, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, lamented that since Nigeria got her independence in 1960, it had never guaranteed security of lives and property of Ndigbo, a situation which he claimed persuaded him to seek independence of Biafra. Army warns against felony, threatens to use force The Nigerian Army, yesterday, said that it would not hesitate to use necessary force within its Rules of Engagement, ROE, to suppress any insurrection,if directed by President Buhari . To this effect, it warned agitators for actualisation of Republic of Biafra, saying that it would not fold its hands and watch them endanger the security of the country, Reviewing the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement at the 81 Division Officers Mess, Victoria Island, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Isido Edet, said the Nigerian Army was constitutionally obligated to, among other things, suppress insurrection and act in aid of civil authority to restore order when called upon to do so by the President. He said: “It is in the public domain that certain elements are agitating for seccession. Though they have been counselled by elder statesmen that such exercise is not for the good of Nigerians because we have gone through that lane before. We had a civil war and in some areas we are yet to overcome the consequences of the civil war. For people to start talking about the dismemberment of the country is the most unfortunate thing at this point in time in our country. ‘’The Nigerian Army would like to send an unequivocal warning to all and sundry, more specifically, to all those threatening and agitating for the dismemberment of the country, those committing treasonable felony and arson as well as wanton destruction of lives and property that once the army is deployed, we shall apply ROE to the letter.” He, however, wished that the present situation in the South-East region of the country would not degenerate into a situation whereby the army would be deployed, saying it could lead to the enforcement of its ROE to the fullest. He also warned officers and soldiers not to take sides in any conflict or aid and abet any act of arson, vandalism or unprofessional conduct, threatening that anyone found culpable would face the consequences. Major General Edet also assured Lagosians that there was no cause for alarm over report on the influx of terrorists into the country, disclosing that the 81 division was fully at alert. Edet’s warning to the Biafran agitators was also re-echoed by the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, which in a statement by Army Director of Public Relations,Colonel Hamza Gambo, regretted that activities of MASSOB, IPOB and other affiliate groups have led to an increased sense of insecurity across the regions. Also, the General Officer Commanding the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army, Hassan Umaru, said at a press conference in Maxwell Kobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Plateau State, yesterday that “the Nigerian Army would like to send an unequivocal warning to all and sundry, more specifically to all those threatening and agitating for the dismemberment of the country, committing treasonable felony and arson as well as wanton destruction of lives and property. “Once deployed, we shall apply the ROE to the latter. It is, however, hoped that such circumstances would not arise that we should be deployed on such operations because, within the ambit of the law, we shall apply the ROE to the fullest,” he said. FG must halt Pro-Biafra agitations —Makinde Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Rotimi Makinde, however urged the Federal Government to halt the agitations because they are politically motivated. His words: “As a patriotic Nigerian, I condemn in strong terms the potential threat to Nigeria’s unity as a result of the activities of some pro-Biafra groups, which I believe is politically motivated by some treacherous individuals. “Nigerians have put behind them the ugly memories of 1967 to 1970; Nigeria was the theatre of a cruel and bloody civil war that is commonly known as Biafra War. The conflict allegedly originated from internal crisis such as tribalism and political failures of the civil government after the independence, as well from external influences by the ex-colonial powers. The war, which ended with Biafra surrender, confirmed the military as holder of power starting a long period of political dominance in Nigeria history. “Unfortunately, those who are currently behind the protests are youths who have little or no idea of what the war cost Nigerians as well as the collateral damage the country suffered as a result of the 30 months war. Although I believe very strongly that the campaign was being driven by just a few people, though it is true that, majority of the Igbo people do not share this secessionist view. We must restructure Nigeria now —Okorocha To curtail the pro-Biafra protests and other problems in the country, Governor Okorocha called for the immediate restructuring of the country. Okorocha gave the advice, yesterday, in Abuja while delivering a lecture on “Managing Change in a Democracy” during the FRCN 2015 Annual Lecture. He said it was worrisome that since the nation’s independence in 1960, it is still battling with how to coexist as one nation devoid of all the numerous problems of ethnicity and religion. Okorocha, who also spoke of his meeting with leaders of the secessionists MASSOB said Nigeria must wake up from its present position, which he described as a sleeping giant to begin to do things like most other nations of the world who take the issue of their citizens seriously. “There is a major issue that we must address urgently in Nigeria and that is the issue of unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Today, I must say that the only force holding Nigeria is God because all the qualities and qualifications of nations that have broken, all of them are here and all the characteristics of a broken nation are in Nigeria. Look at the insurgency in the North-East, the crisis in the South and the last election we had, yet we are still together, it means that God is not done with us yet, we must thank God but we must also not take this grace of God for granted. “Our main problem is tribalism and sectionalism, some few months ago when President Jonathan was in power. Some people from the South-South and the Christians said it was their time. Today it is President Buhari and some local Nigerians will say it is the time for northerners and Muslims. No nation can develop in that manner. “When the issue of MASSOB came, they ended their rally in Owerri three days ago in Imo State and it was meant to be the main rally where the catastrophe and destruction will happen. The information came to me that MASSOB was coming to Imo State. With the consent of the President and the Service Chiefs, I said no shooting, give them proper escort. So they were followed with armoured tanks and military vehicles and they went round, prayed at every junction and ended up in Imo State without a drop of blood. “But in the night, my chief of staff told me that he got a call from somebody that the leadership of MASSOB wanted to see me, so I called Mr. President and intimated him and he said I should go ahead and receive them. So by 11 pm MASSOB arrived my house. When they came in you could see people that for a very long time did not care to take their bath and the first stood up to say ‘I am Late Dr. so, so and so, another said ‘I am late Barr. Or Late Chief so, so and so’ and I told them that I don’t communicate with dead people since they have ‘late’ attached to their names. But they told me they have their reasons. “They said that some of them were killed in the North-East and they ran back home, they are not doing anything and most of them are orphans and their children cannot go back to school and nobody cares to listen to them. They also told me that they were part of the Niger Delta that caused the problems there but when they gave them amnesty, they were not given after surrendering their arms. Third, they told me that in Lagos they locked up their shops and the traditional ruler said they should jump into the lagoon. Number four, that they have more than 160 corpses of their members litered all over the country without burial. Number five, they said they want God to hear them. When I asked if it is the reason they want to declare a nation, they said they want everybody to know that the issue that led to Biafra is still there. It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good, sometimes our leaders have a role to play because every unemployed youth in this country is a time bomb.”
