Man arrested at sango-ota for naming his pet Buhari

30-year-old trader has been arrested by the police in Ogun state for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari.’ The trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, of No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested last weekend, after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari. Vanguard learned that the complainant reported the case at Sango Police Station, last Saturday, after which the trader was arrested and detained. However, it was gathered that efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed following a clever move by the suspect. The trader, said to be trading in female wears at a popular market in Sango, allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog and possibly eat the meat in order to avoid being implicated. It was gathered that consistent appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail. Trader denied bail The case, however, took a different dimension two days later when Chinakwe’s relatives went to Sango police station to further plead for his bail only to be informed that the case file and the suspect have been transferred to Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran. A relation to the suspect, who simply identified himself as Chiedozie, told Vanguard that his brother was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail. Chiedozie said: “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari.  Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up.

The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.” Police sources, however, told Vanguard that the actions of the suspect “were very provocative.” The source said: “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.” As at press time, relations to the suspect were still making frantic efforts to effect his bail while his accusers are insisting that he must be prosecuted. Police confirms arrest When contacted around 8pm yesterday, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details. Oyeyemi later called, stating that: “I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” Continuing, he said: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.” When asked about the whereabouts of the dog that will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police spokesman said: “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it.”

Meet Nigerian Born Londoner, Elijah Oyefeso Who Earns 80K Pounds A Month As Self-Taught Stockbroker

elijah oyefeso
A 21-year-old university drop out now earns up to £80,000 a month.
The self-taught stockbroker claimed that he rakes in £20,000 and £30,000 on a bad month.
Londoner Elijah Oyefeso appeared on Channel 4’s Rich Kids Go Shopping and claimed that he made his fortune by using his student loan to set up his empire.
He now lives in £5,000-a-month flat in pricey Kensington, and splashes out on super cars, having recently snapped up a £125,000 Mercedes GTS.
After his fortunes changed, Oyefeso said that he now only works just one hour a day.
“On a good month, I earn between £70,000 and £80,000,” he told FEMAIL.
“If you work hard you don’t need to look at the price tag, you just get it.”
Originally from Camberwell, he revealed how he suffered at the hands of jealousy of his peers especially after splashing out on his first Mercedes at the age of 18.
“They’ve come from the same area and they’re still in the same area and went to school in the same area,” he said.
“My mum came from west Africa and came with probably £100 in her pocket.”
He dropped out of his business management court at University of Buckingham to give him a leg up and began investing with the cash.
In just nine months, he was earning tens of thousands of pounds on the stock market.
Oyefeso was filmed for the documentary trading online, where he made £1,000 in just 15 minutes.
elijah oyefeso 2
He claimed that he knows “when to stop” after having three years of experience under his belt.
Classical music is his go-to genre while trading, as he said: “There’s a saying, you are who you chill with. I chill with people who have half a million in the bank.
“Earning £20 to £30,000 a month, in my world that’s not good. It motivates you to do more.”
Earlier this year, he made headlines for crashing his £150,000 Lambourghini into his other £60,000 Bentley, leaving him with a £55,000 repair bill.
Oyefso revealed that he likes to invest in watches as well, revealing that he splashed out on a £21,000 Cartier watch that he’s only worn twice since purchasing it. He also gives his watches names, dubbing one watch Michelle and another Aaliyah. Yes, seriously.
He set up his company, DCT Training Group, to help others learn how to become a stockbroker. But gives a free trial of just five days before making users stump up £107 a month.
“It’s to help people learn the basics. I tell them to go to this website or read this book,” he said.
Of his weakness for cars, after splashing out on his Lambo at the age of 20 and painting it gold, he said: “When you’re little you’ve got your ideal car, you’ve got your dream car. Some kids are like ‘I want to get a Bugatti, I want to get a Ferrari’.
“Some people are like “yeah yeah.” But I got it.’ That was my dream, I worked for it, I got it.”
While he certainly likes his toys, the university drop out is currently building something special for his mother in Africa.
“It’s a surprise I haven’t told her yet,” he said of the £76,000 five-bedroom home.
Well, he’s let the cat out of the bag now.

Nigeria exports 328,897mbs of crude in four years - NEITI

TVC NEWS (ABUJA) - The Federal Government of Nigeria exported a total of 328, 897 million barrels of crude oil in the last four years, the Nigerian Extractive Industrial Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said.
The agency, in a paper titled: ‘’NNPC offshore processing and swap arrangements: Revenue loss to the nation’’ obtained at the weekend, showed that the Federal Government allocated 655,235million barrels of crude during the period under review, of which it exported 328, 897 million barrels to generate revenues for the country.
The paper, which gives an account of the number of volumes of crude oil allocated per year, volumes delivered to the refineries for processing into petrol, kerosene, diesel and other finished products, volumes supplied for offshore processing, and those exchanged between Nigeria and her partners abroad, said the government supplied 134, 387 million barrels of crude oil to the refineries during the period.
In the paper presented by former NEITI Acting Executive Secretary, Dr Orji Ogbonaya Orji, the government allocated more crude oil for exports since it derives more than 70 per cent of its earnings from oil exports.
Giving a breakdown of crude oil dealings during the period under review, NEITI said the country allocated 161,914 million of crude oil in 2009; 166, 523millions in 2010; 164,455million in 2011; and 162,343millions in 2012.
It said the government exported 142, 500 million barrels of crude oil in 2009; 97, 792 million barrels in 2010; 39, 341 million barrels in 2011 and 49, 215 million barrels in 2012.
The paper said the government delivered 19, 363 million barrels to the refineries in 2009; 34, 703 million barrels in 2010; 48, 394 million barrels in 2011 and 34, 927 million barrels in 2012.
Others include crude oil offshore processing-27,556 million barrels of crude oil in 2010; 26, 688 million barrels of crude oil 2011; and 22, 755 million barrels of crude oil in 2012.
Also, the paper recalled that the idea of swapping crude oil for refined products began in the mid 80s, adding that the idea was introduced to enable NNPC access funds to meet its obligations in the Joint Venture Agreements (JVAs)

Skye Bank’s CEO advocates investment in manufacturing

Skye Bank’s CEO advocates investment in manufacturing
Group Managing Director/CEO of Skye Bank Plc, Timothy Oguntayo, has called for massive investment in the manufacturing, agriculture and extractive industries for the success of the diversification program of the government.
He spoke during  a ‘Roundtable session on the Manufacturing outlook for 2016’ organised by the Dr. Biodun Adedipe led BAA Associates in Lagos.
Oguntayo, who was Lead panelist at the roundtable; said he has identified three sectors that are critical to the success of the economic diversification agenda of the government in view of the dwindling oil prices, low GDP growth, and rising unemployment in the country.
He said hitherto, the manufacturing sector contributed 10 per cent of Gross Domestic Product before the advent of oil boom of the 1970s, but lamented Nigeria’s overdependence on oil export and earnings from the 1990s to date.
He said the over dependence on oil resulted in the neglect of the manufacturing sector; just as low investment in public goods and infrastructure led to the decline in manufacturing activities.
To reverse the negative trend, he recommended the expansion of public infrastructure like road, electricity, among others to promote manufacturing. In addition, he advised manufacturers to access the earmarked N200 billion Central Bank of Nigeria and N200 billion Bank of Industry’s intervention funds to boost their operations.
Noting that commercial banks were not structured to provide long term funding but bridge finance, he said the Bank of Industry and NEXIM Bank should be strengthened to provide long term funding for manufacturers

We regret killing many people — Suspects

We regret killing many people — Suspects
The Suspects
In the last eight years, Idowu Tijani and his terror group have allegedly killed no fewer than nine persons in the Ijoko Community of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State.
While their exploits in crime lasted, they were the nemesis of residents and members of a faction involved in the tussle for the traditional stool in Ijoko.
The terror unleashed on the community by Tijani and his blood-thirsty gang ended when the police arrested his lieutenants, Rasaq Ogundairo aka ‘Babalawo Poly’ and Raimi Ogunkunle, 25, after a trail.
Three cut-to-size single barrel pistols, two double barrel pistols, one pump action gun with 14 cartridges, five cutlasses and charms were recovered from the gang.
Parading the suspects on Monday at the Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the State Commissioner for Police, Mr Abdulmajid Ali, disclosed that a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed the gang’s hideout in Ijoko and arrested Ogundairo. He said: “The arrest of the suspect led to the arrest of two members of the gang. The leader of the gang, Idowu Tijani, confessed to have killed four people, including Soje, Babajeje and Agali in the Ijoko area.”
Speaking with The Nation, Tijani regretted killing many people in the community in the last eight years. In tears, he said: “May God forgive me my atrocities, and I want to advise those who foment trouble to desist because it does not pay. Even if my arrest leads to death, well, that is my fate. But I regret all the killings that I have carried out so far.”
Tijani explained that he took to crime to avenge the death of his four-year-old son, Fathiu, who was allegedly killed during the violence that engulfed the Ijoko community in the wake of the Obaship crisis. “Oba Matanmi is a younger brother to my mother. I was not involved in land-grabbing activities because I am a furniture maker and married with four children. I have a workshop in my house, which I built a few years ago,” he said.
“On a particular day about eight years ago, some members of Tobalase group who are loyalists of one Oba Ogunseye stormed my house while I had gone out to watch a football match at a nearby field. They destroyed my house before setting it ablaze, and a portion of the building fell on my son, Fathiu and killed him. Three days after the incident, I took my gun and headed to the home of one Monsusru Osoba aka ‘Olori Odo’. I met him in front of his house and shot him but he escaped into his room where I finished him up.
”A lot of people were arrested in connection with the murder of Olori Odo but I was not arrested. I also killed Soje during a fight in the community. Soje and his group attacked me during the visit of Olota of Ota to Sango Secondary School. Soje tried to shoot me but the trigger refused to pull, so I quickly shot him dead and ran away.
“I did not intend to kill people, but the obaship tussle between Oba Matanmi and Oba Ogunseye was responsible for the attack on my house at No. 17, Ago Giwa Street, Ijoko which led to the death of my son made me to embark on a killing spree.”
Tijani said he got his gun from his late boss, adding that his arrest was due to a row he had with Rasaq Ogundairo. “I got the gun I used from my late boss called Tunji. Rasaq (Ogundairo) is just like a brother to me but he suddenly turned to armed robbery and I reported him to Oba Matanmi, who asked me to inform the police. Rasaq and one of his friends were arrested and made to sign and undertaking not to engage in robbery again. After the police released them, Rasaq condemned me for instigating their arrest and vowed to reveal how I killed Olori Odo, hence, my eventual arrest.”
Ogundairo, 25, who confessed to being a member of Eiye Confraternity, said he had killed some people, including one Tosin and Dare.
He narrated how friends in the Ijoko neighbourhood initiated him into cultism. “I am a member of Eiye Confraternity. We have been terrorising Ijoko community and killing people for sometime now. I joined the cult group about two years ago when some boys in the neighbourhood initiated me through beating and alcoholic drink.
“I have killed so many people, including one Tosin and Dare, who are members of a rival cult group called Aiye Confraternity. The duo are deadly too, and we used to hunt for Aiye members because they can kill us too. Whenever we attack Aiye members, they would run away and abandon their motorcycles and sundry items and sell them.”
Ogundairo traced his descent into crime. ”I am called ‘Babalawo Poly’ because my father is a herbalist, but, regrettably, the charms found on me could not protect me from being arrested.
“I also partake in land-grabbing activities and I work with Oba Matanmi’s group to visit construction sites in the community. I don’t know whether my parents are aware of my arrest because they had warned me not to get involved in crime, but I did not heed their warning until I was caught in the act. The reality of my parents’ homily has since dawned on me.
The third member of the gang, Ogunkunle, also gave a confession. He said: ”I am neither a member of Eiye Confraternity nor Aiye member, but I belong to Ogundairo’s gang. My father is one of the baales installed by Oba Matanmi. I have never killed in my life and I regret all my actions.

Foundation lifts Apapa residents

Foundation lifts Apapa residents

More than 2000 people have benefitted from free health programme organized by Mike Egbayelo Foundation.
The programme, which took place in Apapa Local Government Area, Lagos, was part of the independent mobilization programme for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Apapa.
The one week event afforded residents of Apapa to benefit from the free BP and blood sugar test, free cancer screening, free eye test and glasses, free drugs and treatment.
The chairman of the occasion, Pa Sarumi Adebayo, was full of praises for Egbayelo, whom he described as worthy of emulation.. “I wish we have people who are thinking about the welfare of our people. If we have people who want to come and help, please they should not hesitate, “ the party leader advised.
The convener of the Foundation, Mike Egbayelo said the event was a significant milestone in the life of the foundation, which aims to provide supports for the All Progressives Congress (APC) .
According to him, one does not need to seek political appointment to render assistance. He assured the exercise would be a continuous one.
“Today’s event is a confirmation of the progressive and people-oriented programmes of our party and a way or saying thank you to Apapa people for making APC their number one party in the local government. Free and qualitative healthcare is one of the cardinal programmes of our party, and thus we are aligning with this philosophy to prove that APC is the party to beat.”
It will be recalled that the foundation began its intervention last year by the provision of cash support of N10, 000 each to children of 10 widows in secondary schools and N100, 000 (one hundred thousand naira) grant to a deserving student who secured admission to a private university to support the tuition fees.
The foundation equally facilitated gainful employment to 12 Apapa youth from our 5 wards in Apapa Local Government.

Oil price falls below $27/bbl

Oil price falls below $27/bbl

For the first time since 2003, the  price of Brent crude, the world’s benchmark oil yesterday sold below $28 a barrel, America’s crude grade – West Texas Intermediate (WTI) $26.62 and OPEC basket grade $23.85 a barrel on Tuesday.
Despite over 25 per cent slump in oil price so far this year with the attendant pains and fears, oil drillers and producing nations have continued to pump more oil into an oversupplied market. Oil traders are concerned that the crude oil supply glut could last longer.
The world stock markets are declining. Nigerian stock market last week lost over N455 billion as stock prices failed to rally.
The extent of challenge before the government and the citizens can be explained in the concerns over the implementation of this year’s budget. Currently the government has proposed to borrow $1.8 trillion to fund the budget based on a benchmark of $38 a barrel. Today the price has dropped below $27 a barrel creating a shortfall of over $10 a barrel in the budget benchmark.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report that the world may soon drown in oversupply. Senior market analyst at Price Futures Group, Phil Flynn said there is also “a record short position in hedge funds and we have the promise of more Iranian oil on the world market. Add it all up and it’s causing the crude-oil market to crater around the globe.”
Iran’s production is expected to ramp up fairly significantly this year. The country projects that its production will increase by 500,000 barrels per day (bpd ) in the coming weeks, along with a further 500,000 bpd in the next few months. The IEA in its monthly oil market report projected it will rise by 0.3 million bpd by the end of the current quarter, and by 0.6 million bpd by mid-year. The EIA expects it to average 3.1 bpd in 2016, an average increase of 300,000 bpd across the entire year.
A university don at the Pan Atlantic University, Dr Austin Nweze confirmed it would be a challenging year for the country. He said the price of oil will get worse before getting better, adding that the return of Iran into the mainstream will worsen the situation.

Seriki chiefs seek to stop Adetunji as Olubadan

Seriki chiefs seek to stop Adetunji as Olubadan

Another chieftaincy line in Ibadan, the Seriki, has headed for the court to stop the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-In-Council from installing the Balogun of Ibadan, High Chief Saliu Adetunji, as the Olubadan of Ibadan land.
The Head of the acclaimed line, Chief Adebayo Oyediji, and five others yesterday filed a motion seeking an order compelling the government and the Olubadan-In-Council to instal Oyediji as the Olubadan.
Oyediji, 89, and others based their prayer on a 1989 Supreme Court judgment, which ordered the recognition of the Seriki as the third line to produce the Olubadan.
According to him and the motion filed by his lawyer, A.G. Adeniran, before the Oyo state Chief Judge, Justice Mukthar Abimbola, the Olubadan -in-Council had since 1989 when the Seriki line obtained a Supreme Court judgment in their favour, denied them the opportunity of being admitted into the Olubadan line.
The businessman alleged disregard for rule of law on the part of the Olubadan -in-Council. He said he was the next to be installed Olubadan based on the said judgment.
The motion will be heard next Wednesday.
According to him, the alleged marginalisation of the Seriki line began since the last Otun Seriki, Chief Adisa Akinloye, was denied the opportunity before he died in 2007. He said that Seriki was the third line in the chieftaincy of Olubadan, adding upon the denial, the Supreme Court in 1989 ordered that Seriki line be included as the third line to the appointment of Olubadan.
Oyediji claimed that the problem with the Seriki line started with the making of the 1959 Ekerin Balogun of Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration which put Seriki under the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadan and provided for the first time  that Seriki can only be promoted to Ekerin Balogun only if there are two simultaneous vacancies occurring in the Ashipa and Ekerin Balogun titles.
He explained that upon winning against the then Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Oloyede Asanke, and all the Chiefs in Balogun and Olubadan line, after challenging the said chieftaincy declaration, the Olubadan then prevailed on the Seriki chiefs not to insist on three lines for the Olubadan chieftaincy, but that rather chiefs in the Seriki line should cross to Ekerin Balogun and Ekerin Olubadan on the two lines whenever there is a vacancy in any of the two lines.
According to him, the out-of-court agreement was that the Balogun and Olubadan lines would each have two steps of promotion from Ekarun to Ekerin in their lines before the Seriki line shall have its own promotion to Ekerin in any of the two lines.
Having been denied the opportunity for long and following the consecutive deaths of high chiefs Sulaimon Omiyale and Omowale Kuye from both sides in November and December last year, Chief Oyediji said that it was the time of Seriki to have a shot at the Olubadan, stressing: “When the agreement was reached, the late Oba Odulana was the only senior ranking high chief in the Olubadan line and we were in the same rank. If that agreement was followed, I am the next person to succeed him.”
In the new motion filed by his lawyer, Adeniran, dated 19/01/2016 marked I/421/07 seeking an amendment to reflect the earlier order of the court, he sought a declaration that “by the provision of the consent judgment delivered by the high court in suit No. I/313/88, it is the turn of the claimants to produce the next Olubadan of Ibadan on both the Olubadan line and the Balogun line”.
He also sought the order of the court “setting aside the purported appointments made by the 1st defendant (Oba Odulana) to fill vacancies existing in the chieftaincy titles of Ekerin Olubadan, Ashipa Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, Otun Olubadan and Balogun Olubadan of Ibadan since the 21st of November, 2008 up till the last appointment he made on the 1st of January, 2016”.
Oyediji also called for an order “setting aside the purported approval granted by the Governor of a Oyo state on the 5th of January, 2016 or thereabout to the appointments made by the 1st defendant on the 1st of January, 2016 to fill vacancies existing in the chieftaincy titles”.

WHO’s book to improve Nigerians’ health

WHO’s book to improve Nigerians’ health

How can Nigerians enjoy good health in 2016? It is by adopting the World Health Organisation (WHO) template, report OYEYEMI GBENGA-MUSTAPHA and WALE ADEPOJU.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the global policeman  for health matters. It has a template for member-countries in healthcare delivery.
According to the WHO, the right to the highest attainable standard of health  requires a set of social criteria that are  conducive to the health of all people.
In addition, the availability of health services, safe working conditions, adequate housing and nutritious foods is non-negotiable. This is because achieving the right to health is closely related to that of other human rights- the right to food, housing, work, education, non-discrimination, access to information, and participation.
Nigerians do not enjoy optimum healthcare. Some do not even have access to.
To WHO,  the right to health includes both freedoms and entitlements:
Freedoms include the right to control one’s health and body (e.g. sexual and reproductive rights) and to be free from interference (e.g. freedom from torture and from non-consensual medical treatment and experimentation).
Entitlements include the right to a system of health protection that gives everyone an equal opportunity to enjoy the highest attainable level of health.
Health policies and programmes have the ability to either promote or violate human rights, including the right to health, depending on the way they are designed or implemented. Taking steps to respect and protect human rights upholds the health sector’s responsibility to address everyone’s health.
Disadvantaged populations and the right to health
According to WHO, vulnerable and marginalised groups in societies are often less likely to enjoy the right to health. Three of the world’s most fatal communicable diseases – malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis – disproportionately affect the world’s poorest populations, placing a tremendous burden on the economies of developing countries. Conversely the burden of non-communicable disease – most often perceived as affecting high-income countries is now increasing disproportionately among lower income countries and populations.
Within countries, some populations, such as indigenous communities are exposed to greater rates of ill-health and face significant obstacles to accessing quality and affordable healthcare. This population has substantially higher mortality and morbidity rates, due to non communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, than the general public. People who are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection, including young women, men who have sex with men, and injecting drug users, are often characterised by social and economic disadvantage and discrimination. These vulnerable populations may be the subject of laws and policies that further compound this marginalisation and make it harder to access prevention and care services. Nigeria can do well by looking into this.
Violations of human rights
 in the health sphere
Violations or lack of attention to human rights can have serious health consequences. Overt or implicit discrimination in the delivery of health services violates fundamental human rights. Many people with mental disorders are kept in mental institutions against their will, despite having the capacity to make decisions regarding their future. On the other hand, when there are shortages of hospital beds, it is often members of this population that are discharged prematurely, which can lead to high readmission rates and sometimes even death, and also constitutes a violation of their right to receive treatment.
Similarly, women are frequently denied access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and services in developing and developed countries. This is a human rights violation that is deeply engrained in societal values about women’s sexuality. In addition to denial of care, women in certain societies are sometimes forced into procedures, such as sterilisation, abortions or virginity examinations.
Human rights-based approaches
A human rights-based approach to health provides strategies and solutions to address and rectify inequalities, discriminatory practices and unjust power relations, which are often at the heart of inequitable health outcomes.
The goal of a human rights-based approach is that all health policies, strategies and programmes are designed with the objective of progressively improving the enjoyment of all people to the right to health. Interventions to reach this objective adhere to rigorous principles and standards, including:
Non-discrimination: The principle of non-discrimination seeks to guarantee that human rights are exercised without discrimination of any kind based on race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status such as disability, age, marital and family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, health status, place of residence, economic and social situation’.
Availability: A sufficient quantity of functioning public health and healthcare facilities, goods and services, as well as programmes.
Accessibility: Health facilities, goods and services accessible to everyone. Accessibility has four overlapping dimensions: Non-discrimination; physical accessibility; economical accessibility (affordability); and information accessibility.
Acceptability: All health facilities, goods and services must be respectful of medical ethics and culturally appropriate as well as sensitive to gender and life-cycle requirements.
Quality: Health facilities, goods and services must be scientifically and medically appropriate and of good quality.
Accountability: States and other duty-bearers are answerable for the observance of human rights.
Universality: Human rights are universal and inalienable. All people everywhere in the world are entitled to them.
Policies and programmes must be designed to be responsive to the needs of the population as a result of established accountability. A human rights based-approach identifies relationships in order to empower people to claim their rights and encourage policy makers and service providers to meet their obligations in creating more responsive health systems.
Federal and state ministries of health expected response
WHO has made a commitment to mainstream human rights into healthcare programmes and policies on both national and regional levels, by looking at underlying determinants of health as part of a comprehensive approach to health and human rights. In addition, WHO has been actively strengthening its role in providing technical, intellectual and political leadership on the right to health including the following, which Federal and state ministries of health can adapt:
  • Strengthening the capacity of WHO and its Member-states to integrate a human rights-based approach to health;
  • Advancing the right to health in international law and international development processes; and
  • Advocating health-related human rights, including the right to health.

Pampers baby-dry aids growth, says paediatrician

Pampers baby-dry aids growth, says paediatrician
•From left: Dr. Akinola, Tiwa Savage, Mrs Enekabor and Yousuf, during the event.

Getting enough sleep is important to any baby for many reasons, such as restoring energy, to building brain connections, Pampers Paediatrician and Fellow, European Society of Paediatric Endocrinologists, Dr Ronke Akinola, has said
She spoke at the unveiling of Pampers ‘#MomsKnowBest’ campaign in Lagos.
She said growth hormones are usually released throughout the day, but for kids the intense period of release is shortly after the beginning of deep sleep.
“Wet babies do not sleep soundly, especially for those on napkin clothes, fake or substandard diapers. Pampers Baby-Dry guarantees a dry night, even when wet because of the gel that absorbs the urine and this will ensure your baby sleeps for a longer period with the resultant effect of aiding babies’ development,” she said.
Akinola said the stretchy sides which expand and relax with the baby’s tummy prevent leakages and keeps the baby comfortable all night. I commended Procter & Gamble (P&G) for improving on its Pampers Baby-Dry Diaper. It would significantly aid the general well-being and development of babies.
Tiwa Savage, the popular R and B music star and face of the campaign, attested to Pampers’ advantage at the event. She said the diaper keeps her baby dry throughout the night and he wakes up full of strength.
She said: “When I was in the UK, I used Pampers for my baby and when we returned to Nigeria, I decided to try the Nigeria Pampers out of many other diapers available in the market. My experience was just as great as with the one I used in the UK. It keeps my baby dry throughout the night and he wakes up in the morning full of strength and I have come to trust it.”
Speaking on the “#MomsKnowBest” campaign, P&G’s Brand Marketing Director, Ehis Enekabor said the campaign is about encouraging moms to discuss what is best for their babies and share useful tips with one another , because the everyday decisions moms make about their babies, plays a role in their overall healthy development and the campaign also aims at encouraging moms to try out Pampers Baby-Dry diaper which has been improved to cater for superior dryness and protection.
“Moms always know what is best for their baby that is why we want them to try out our diaper. One Pampers diaper is guaranteed to keep your baby dry throughout the night,” she said.

CURSE OF THE ANCESTORS!

LEBO Sikwane wanted to please her ancestors when she followed her calling to become a sangoma.
But life turned ugly for her when she didn’t follow the correct procedure! The 38-year-old from Chiawelo in Soweto told Daily Sun her gobela disappeared with her car last week and she believed she was having bad luck because she didn’t listen to her ancestors. “Other sangomas have since told me my parents and ancestors were angry with me for not involving them when I chose a gobela. Normally the ancestors choose. “I made life difficult for myself by not letting my ancestors make the decision.” Lebo said she paid a heavy price as she was scammed by the sangoma from Protea Glen. “The sangoma asked if he could buy my broken-down car, which was standing in my yard for over two years. He said he would buy the car and give me half the money and keep the other half for thwasa services,” said Lebo. “But he disappeared with the car. I won’t trust sangomas again!” Lebo said she was still being tormented by her ancestors who wanted her to become a sangoma. She said although her Renault Clio was not working she loved it and was planning to fix it one day. Lebo’s uncle, Elias Masinyane (63) said Lebo disrespected her parents and ancestors. “She’ll have to start her sangoma training again so she can be healed,” he said, adding that the family would report the gobela to the Traditional Healers Council and open theft charges against him.

World’s most-wanted drug lord, Chapo Guzman recaptured

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The world’s most-wanted drug lord was captured for a third time in a daring raid Friday by Mexican marines, six months after he tunneled out of a maximum security prison in a made-for-Hollywood escape that deeply embarrassed the government and strained ties with the United States.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced the capture of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, writing in his Twitter account: “mission accomplished: we have him.”

Few had thought Guzman would be taken alive, and few now believe Mexico will want to try to hold him a third time in Mexican prisons. He escaped from maximum-security facilities in 2001 and on July 11, 2015, the second breakout especially humiliating for the Pena Nieto administration, which only held him for less than 18 months. The U.S. has sought his extradition, though Mexico in the past has said he would serve sentences here first.
But Pena Nieto gave a brief live message Friday afternoon that focused heavily on touting the competency of his administration, which has suffered a series of embarrassments and scandals in the first half of his presidency.
“The arrest of today is very important for the government of Mexico. It shows that the public can have confidence in its institutions,” Pena Nieto said. “Mexicans can count on a government decided and determined to build a better country.”
Guzman was apprehended after a shootout with Mexican marines in Los Mochis, a seaside city in Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa, said a federal official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by name. He said Guzman was taken alive and was not wounded.
Five people were killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the clash at a house. It was unclear if Guzman was there or nearby when the raid was under way. Another law enforcement official said Guzman was captured at a motel on the outskirts of Los Mochis.
Given Guzman’s penchant for escaping through tunnels, the details of his capture, once they are released by Mexican officials, are sure to be startling.
After his first capture in Guatemala in June 1993, Guzman was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He reportedly made his 2001 escape from the maximum security prison in a laundry cart, though some have discounted that version. His second escape last July was even more audacious. He slipped down a hole in his shower stall in plain view of guards into a mile-long tunnel dug from a property outside the prison.
The tunnel was complete with ventilation, lights and a motorbike on rails, illustrating the extent to which corruption was involved in covering up such an elaborate operation.
In the United States, the Drug Enforcement Administration hailed the capture as proof of the close relationship between the two countries. “The arrest is a significant achievement in our shared fight against transnational organized crime, violence, and drug trafficking,” a DEA statement said.
The U.S. Justice Department commended the working relationship as well.
“I salute the Mexican law enforcement and military personnel who have worked tirelessly in recent months to bring Guzman to justice,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said.
A Mexican law enforcement official said authorities located Guzman several days ago, based on reports he was in Los Mochis.
The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said authorities had even searched storm drains in the area. In 2014, Guzman escaped capture by fleeing through a network of interconnected tunnels in the drainage system in Culiacan, the Sinaloa state capital.
The Mexican Navy said in a statement that marines acting on a tip raided a home in Los Mochis before dawn. They were fired on from inside the structure, it said. Five suspects were killed and six others arrested. The marine’s injuries were not life threatening.
Marines seized two armored vehicles, eight rifles, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher at the home, the statement added.
Photos of the arms seized at the non-descript white house showed that two of the rifles were .50-caliber sniper guns, capable of penetrating most bullet-proof vests and cars. The grenade launcher was found loaded, with an extra round nearby. An assault rifle had a 40-mm grenade launcher and at least one grenade.
Some in Mexico had doubted Guzman would allow himself to be captured alive, and others doubted that Mexico’s government — given the successive embarrassments of his two escapes from prison — would want to hold him again in a Mexican prison.
“Many people had doubted he could be recaptured,” Mexican security analyst Raul Benitez said. “It is a big success for the government.”
The United States filed requests for extradition for Guzman on June 25, before he escaped from prison. In September, a judge issued a second provisional arrest warrant on U.S. charges of organized crime, money laundering drug trafficking, homicide and others.
Former Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam had bragged earlier that Mexico wouldn’t extradite Guzman until he had served his sentences in Mexico.
Benitez said such bragging “makes me ashamed.”
“It would be better for the Americans to take him away,” he said.
