Ecuador earthquake death toll rises to 238
on
11:22:00
THE death toll from Ecuador’s biggest earthquake in
decades soared to at least 238 yersterday as rescuers using tractors
and bare hands hunted desperately for survivors in shattered coastal
towns.
And at least 11 people were still missing following the quakes which killed 41 people and wounded hundreds in Japan. In Ecuador, the 7.8 magnitude quake struck off the Pacific coast at the weekend and was felt around the Andean nation of 16 million people, causing panic as far away as the highland capital Quito and collapsing buildings and roads in a swath of western towns, Reuters reported.
President Rafael Correa, rushing home from a trip to Italy, said the number of fatalities jumped yesterday to 235. “The immediate priority is to rescue people in the rubble,” he said via Twitter. “Everything can be rebuilt, but lives cannot be recovered, and that’s what hurts the most.”
The government called it the worst quake in the country since 1979. In that disaster, 600 people were killed and 20,000 injured, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. More than 1,500 people were injured, authorities said. Coastal areas nearest the quake were worst affected, especially Pedernales, a rustic tourist spot with beaches and palm trees, which appeared largely flattened.
“There are people trapped in various places, and we are starting rescue operations,” Vice President Jorge Glas said yesterday morning before boarding a plane to the area. A state of emergency was declared in six provinces. Authorities said there had been 163 aftershocks, mainly in the Pedernales area.
Many people spent the night on the streets. In Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, rubble lay in the streets and a bridge fell on top of a car. About 13,500 security force personnel were mobilized to keep order around Ecuador, and $600 million in credit from multilateral lenders was immediately activated for the emergency, the government said.
Meanwhile, at press time, Japan was struggling to restore services in the south-western island of Kyushu after it was hit by two powerful earthquakes.
Some 180,000 people spent a third night in temporary shelters, including cars and tents. More than 62,000 homes remain without electricity and 300,000 homes have no water, Japanese media report. Saturday’s magnitude-7.3 quake struck at 01:25 (15:25 GMT on Friday) close to the city of Kumamoto, which had been hit by a magnitude-6.4 quake on Thursday night. Both quakes were shallow, causing huge damage to roads, bridges and tunnels. Big landslides cut off remote mountain villages.

Omotola: ‘My husband goes to market for me’
on
11:06:00
Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde popularly known as Omosexy is currently being bashed out by fans on social media for an interview she granted last year with a news site where she revealed that her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde, does the family shopping at the local market.
This action she said was due to her status in the Nigerian entertainment. She further stressed that being a household name in Nigeria would absolutely make shopping difficult for her.
Let me tell you something more, my husband is actually the one who goes to the market. I don’t go to the market because I can’t. Because of my status, I can’t. But my husband didn’t say you know traditionally, a man is not suppposed to go to the market, I’m not gonna go, no. My husband actually goes to the market. In my earlier career, I used to go with him but I‘ll stay in the car, because our cars are tainted, so I’ll stay in the car. But then, one time we went to Tejuosho and someone found out I was in the car, it became a major security risk. So, he said don’t ever go with me again. He goes and he has fun, and he comes back home and I do the cooking, so you see, we strengthen each other.”
Somehow somewhere, the interview surfaced on social media today and Nigerians are reacting to the actress statement.
The couple recently got back from Honolulu, Hawaii where they had gone to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. They are happily married with four kids.

Why I dedicated song to Linda Ikeji –Jaybaba
on
11:04:00
NEW kid on the block, Jaybaba (Okonkwo Onyebuchi Joseph), dropped his sophomore single recently. Entitled Falling For You, the track has won him rave reviews. In this chat with Entertainer, 21 year-old Jbaba opens up on why he dedicated his debut single, entitled Linda to celebrity blogger, Linda Ikeji.
How did you begin yourmusic career?
It started from a music group. My guys and I used to hang out and sing. Sometimes, we went all the way to hang out in Lekki with other up-and-coming talents. In the process we discovered we could sing. So, we were like ‘why don’t we just train ourselves.’ So we brought in some producers and here we are today. I have been a music lover since age 14. I was in the choir in my church and sang all the way through secondary school and the university in the church choir.
Who were your influences?
That was Tuface. His style of music blew my mind! He started something new. He brought a new dimension into Nigerian music by starting the afro hip hop revolution.
How did you hook up with Evergreen Entertainment, your management?
Yeah, Evergreen Entertainment is handling my management. We met last year and pushed a song entitled Linda. Then there wasn’t much finance to take it to the next level. It all began after I got a deal just to record a song from my elder brother. I met Evergreen Entertainment on twitter. I was searching for management so I got his twitter handle. He has been very encouraging. From day one we have had a natural understanding. He is like a father to me.
What is Linda, your debut single all about?
It is an afro highlife song. I was talking about Linda Ikeji the celebrity blogger. I admire her because she is so independent. I love independent girls. Too bad I wasn’t fortunate enough to meet her.
What single are you promoting now?
I have just released Falling For You, and the response has been wow! I believe so much in the song; it’s an afro highlife song; I call it the new sound. It is telling the girl of my dreams that whatever she wants, I am capable of delivering and I just want to be her maga.
How do you get inspiration to write songs?
When I hear a good beat I get inspired, and sometimes, around 1 am when everywhere is quiet, I get inspiration as well. Also, when I listen to Tuface’s songs I get inspired.
What are your challenges?
The truth is that the biggest challenge any up-and-coming artiste faces is finance. Mine was a double challenge because I lost the both of my parents last year. I almost gave up but for my elder brother who was behind me. He gave me money to record a track and that track was Linda.
Are you still missing your parents?
Of course I am but life goes on. The Lord giveth and the Lord Taketh, who are we mortals to question him?
Which artistes would you want to do collabo with?
Tuface, because he is my legend. I will also like to do stuff with Davido, Olamide and Wizkid.
What are your dreams?
I want to rule the world of music. I want to win a Grammy. I want to write my footprints in the sands of time as far as music is concerned but I know it will be a gradual process but I believe I will succeed. What I need now is aggressive promotions.

For the audience that thronged the sandy beach of Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island, Lagos, it was a refreshing night as artiste after artiste mounted the stage to thrill. Koko master, D’banj took the excitement a notch higher as he made a wow impression on the audience, asking them to dance with him on stage, a request that needed no further nudging as the fans surged forward to savour the moment.
Apart from Pepsi ambassador, Tiwa Savage and D’banj, other artistes that featured in the night of musical extravaganza were UK-based artiste, Rachel Carr, Yemi Alade, Timaya, Phyno, Riky Rick, and K.O.
Fast rising artistes like Adekunle Gold, David Grey and Small Doctor had earlier opened the show with spectacular performances, serving as appetizers for a night of musical wonder. …Siasia pencils down Iheanacho, Iwobi
on
10:51:00
— 18th April 2016
The coach, who is facing dilemma of getting commitment from European clubs on the release of players to the national team’s camp, maintained that he is sure of few names including Iwobi and Iheanacho, despite not yet decided on his final list for the Games.
He however assured to give all the invited player the opportunity to fight for a shirt in the team.
Siasia has invited 30 players as the fulcrum of his preparations for the summer games, but efforts to have the assurances of the clubs on the release of the players have not yielded the desired results.
SiaOne is however under pressure to prepare the final team list that will be submitted to the Nigerian Olympic Committee on or before April 19.
Nigeria has been drawn in the Group B of the 2016 Olympic Games alongside Japan, Colombia and Sweden.
The Siasia side will open its campaign against Japan on August 4 at the 41,000-seater Arena da Amazonia in Manaus.
Buhari turns to tax as Nigeria gets weaned from crude
on
10:47:00
With crude holding sway as the main source of state revenue, tax enforcement was lax and people showed little interest in what those in power did with the funds, Clement Nwankwo, the executive director of Abuja-based Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, said in an interview. Now the country, which is the biggest oil producer is unable to finance its budget and is counting on ramped up borrowing and taxes to fill the gap.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power last May, has outlined a record budget of N6.1 trillion ($30.6 billion) for 2016 to spend the country out of the current economic slowdown. Higher taxes and improved efficiency in collection are among the cornerstones of the plan. That may carry a political price.
“These taxes are going to come with new demands by citizens for transparency and accountability,” Nwankwo said. “People are going to feel entitled to the ownership of the public purse, rather than the previous experience where they felt it wasn’t money that belonged to them.”
Officials make the case that Nigeria has one of the lowest tax ratios globally. Its tax-to-GDP measure was 1.6 percent in 2012 compared with 14.9 percent in nearby Ghana and 25 percent in South Africa, 25.5 percent in the U.K. and 26.8 percent in Norway, according to World Bank data.
International Monetary Fund Managing (IMF) Director Christine Lagarde, while on a visit to Nigeria in January, urged the government to raise its value added tax rate of 5 percent.
Buhari’s model is Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa’s largest city of 20 million people, which used improved tax collection and sold bonds to fund major infrastructure projects.
Tunde Fowler, who headed the Lagos’ revenue office, was moved by Buhari to the helm of federal tax agency last year with the expectation he will reproduce the results.
Lagos’ revenue soared to N23 billion in 2014 from N600 million per month in 1999 as the state eased up bureaucracy, using strict enforcement and public campaigns to encourage payment, according to a January report from Lagos-based FBN Quest Ltd.
“Our mandate now is to ensure the increase in non-oil revenue to ensure stability in the entire system,” Fowler told a meeting of tax office officials across the country in the northern city of Kano last week.
Authorities will now seek access to mobile-phone subscriber data from the telecommunications regulator and the national identity agency to get more people into the tax roll, according to a statement Monday by the Joint Tax Board.
Replicating Lagos’ success across Nigeria won’t be easy, said Taiwo Oyedele, head of tax at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Nigeria.
The major levy in Lagos was personal income tax, while to increase federal revenue the government will have to look at “very complex” value added taxes and corporate income taxes on foreign companies, many of which operate, but don’t have an official presence in Nigeria, he said.
The federal tax agency, which collected 3.7 trillion naira last year, has set a target to increase revenue by 32 percent this year and expects 70 percent of the income to come from value-added tax. The government has begun more rigorous enforcement of the stamp duty law and expects it will yield about 2 trillion naira annually.
The stamp duty, first signed into law in 2004, saw limited enforcement until a Jan. 15 directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria asking lenders to charge 50 naira on all payments exceeding 1,000 naira to help boost the Treasury.
Businesses operating in Nigeria are also concerned the tax drive may deepen the country’s economic woes by further hurting companies, said Muda Yusuf, Direct General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI). Nigeria’s economic growth slowed in 2015 to 2.8 percent, the slowest pace since 1999, as crude revenue fell and manufacturers struggled amid a shortage of foreign-exchange for imports.
“The mistake is to always look at the investor for the funds,” said Yusuf. “Rather than add to the burden of businesses, the government can look at the efficiency of tax administration.”
While Buhari’s administration is stressing the need to boost revenue, there’s more urgent need to work to manage resources, said Adetokunbo Mumuni, head of Lagos-based Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project.
“In spite of all the noise being made about fallen oil revenue, there are still sufficient resources to manage the economy,” he said. “The only thing lacking is any serious attempt to block leakages and wastefulness.”(Bloomberg)

Apple has used an alternating "S" naming formula to mark years where the iPhone does not receive a major redesign since the debut of the iPhone 3GS in 2009. Releases have been as follows:
2007 - iPhone
2008 - iPhone 3G
2009 - iPhone 3GS
2010 - iPhone 4 (new design)
2011 - iPhone 4s
2012 - iPhone 5 (new design)
2013 - iPhone 5s
2014 - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (new design)
2015 - iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus
The next-generation iPhone is expected to be called the iPhone 7. 2015 marked an "S" iPhone upgrade year that introduced new features such as an improved camera and a better processor, but 2016 will bring an even-year upgrade that will include an all-new iPhone design in addition to new features.
Apple is said to be working on finalizing the iPhone 7's body so we don't know exactly what it will look like, but a reliable source tells MacRumors it continues to use a design similar to the design of the iPhone 6s, but without a rear protruding camera and with no antenna bands across the back of the device. Antenna bands are expected to remain at the top, bottom, and sides of the iPhone.
Apple will continue releasing two versions of each iPhone, so we can expect to see an iPhone 7 and an iPhone 7 Plus in 2016. Apple is said to be planning to stick to the 4.7- and 5.5-inch screen sizes it first introduced with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
Apple is rumored to be aiming to make the iPhone 7 nearly as thin as the 6.1mm iPod touch, mainly through the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack and the implementation of a thinner Lightning port. Eliminating the headphone jack will give Apple more internal space for other components, and Apple will also keep the device slim with the continued use of in-cell panels and TFT-LCD display technology. Apple may replace the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 with a second speaker for stereo audio.
With no headphone jack, wired headphones will connect to the iPhone 7 using its Lightning port and Bluetooth headphones will connect wirelessly. Apple is rumored to be working on Lightning-equipped EarPods to sell alongside the device.
There may be some distinguishing features between the iPhone 7 and the larger-screened iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 7 may ship with 2GB RAM, while the iPhone 7 Plus includes 3GB RAM, and there could be a different camera system. According to rumors, Apple may actually be planning to introduce two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus -- one with a single lens like the iPhone 7 and a second with a dual-lens camera system that offers DSLR-like image quality with 2-3x optical zoom and improved performance in low light conditions.
We still have a long wait until the launch of the iPhone 7, but the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launched in September of 2015. Check out our full roundup on those devices for more information on Apple's latest iPhones.
No Headphone Jack
With the iPhone 7, headphones will need a Lightning connector or a 3.5mm jack-to-Lightning adapter to connect to the Lightning port on the bottom of the phone. The device will also support wireless Bluetooth headphones.
In addition to allowing Apple to shave some thickness off of the iPhone 7 and saving valuable internal space, requiring headphones to connect through the Lightning port will boost overall audio quality. Apple is also rumored to be considering some new noise-canceling technology to remove background noise during music playback and phone calls, but rumors have disagreed on whether this will be introduced in the iPhone 7 or the next-generation iPhone.
Apple is said to be working on Lightning-equipped EarPods that will ship alongside the iPhone 7. They will be similar to the existing EarPods that are included in the iPhone box, but with a Lightning connector instead of a headphone jack. As for the empty space left by the headphone jack, Apple may be planning to replace it with a second speaker to introduce stereo sound in the iPhone 7.
Wireless Earphones
Along with Lightning-equipped EarPods that will be made available with the iPhone 7, Apple is rumored to be working on a new set of wireless Bluetooth earphones that would be sold alongside the iPhone 7 as a premium accessory and alternative to the EarPods. While traditional Bluetooth headphones have a wire that connects the left and right ear pieces to each other, Apple is said to be designing earphones that do not include a connective cord between the ear pieces. These earphones would be similar in design to the Bragi Dash, an upcoming set of earphones that features individual ear pieces for each ear.
Design
The iPhone 7 is expected to be thinner than the iPhone 6s, with Apple
using the elimination of the headphone jack, advances in in-cell panel
technology, and a slimmer Lightning port
to make the iPhone 7 slimmer, perhaps as thin as the iPod touch. Rumors
suggest the iPhone 7 will be between 6.0mm and 6.5mm. Apple's current
iPod touch measures in at 6.1mm, compared to 7.1mm for the iPhone 6s and
7.3mm for the iPhone 6s Plus.
Information obtained by MacRumors and confirmed by additional reports indicates the iPhone 7's design will be somewhat similar to the iPhone 6s, adopting the same general design language. The iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus are expected to feature a revamped camera that is flush with the body of the device, eliminating the protruding camera of the iPhone 6 and 6s.

A
mockup of what the iPhone 7 may look like. It is said to have a design
similar to the iPhone 6s, with a slightly thinner body and no antenna
bands across the middle of device's rear shell.
Apple may also be planning to change the design of the antenna bands
on the device, doing away with the thick white antenna bands that are
located across the back of the Phone 6s rear shell. The bands located at
the top, bottom, and sides of the device are rumored to remain on the
iPhone 7. As
for a thinner Lightning port, while Apple plans to slim it down, it
will continue to be compatible with existing the Lightning connector and
Lightning cables.
Early rumors about the iPhone 7's design suggested the device may have a strengthened, water resistant frame that ditches Apple's traditional aluminum casing for "new compound materials, but a report from Mac Otakara
Apple is planning to implement improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding techniques in the iPhone 7, with the goal of individually shielding most of the major chips in the device. EMI shields are used in iPhones and all other electronic devices to prevent wireless interference between different products.
Improved EMI shielding will perhaps allow Apple to place the various chips in the iPhone 7 closer together, allowing it to shrink down the device or leave room for new components or a larger battery. This could be one of the ways the company will find extra space to make the iPhone 7 thinner than the iPhone 6s.
Apple is rumored to be working on AMOLED displays for future iPhones, but the technology will not be ready for the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 will continue to use the same TFT-LCD display technology used in the iPhone 6s.

iPhone 7 vs. iPhone 7 Plus vs. "iPhone Pro"
With the release of the larger-screened iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple
differentiated between the two devices by including Optical Image
Stabilization in the iPhone 6 Plus for improved photo and video
capturing abilities. The iPhone 6s Plus continued to offer Optical Image
Stabilization while the iPhone 6s did not, and it appears the iPhone 7
and the iPhone 7 Plus could also see different features, mainly when it
comes to the camera.
According to reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may be planning to introduce two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus -- one that includes a single-lens camera like the iPhone 7 and one that includes a dual-lens camera system. This would be an unusual move for Apple because it would splinter the iPhone lineup, and it should be noted that the rumor has not yet been confirmed by a second source.
It is possible that Apple is testing different iPhone 7 Plus prototypes, leading to rumors of two planned iPhone 7 Plus devices. Rumors have suggested Apple is testing and considering multiple dual-lens systems from several camera makers in Japan, China, and Taiwan, and suppliers are gearing up to begin producing components for the lenses.
There's also a questionable rumor sourced from Chinese site MyDrivers suggesting the iPhone 7 Plus with the dual-lens camera system could actually be dubbed the "iPhone Pro" to set it apart from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus with a standard single-lens camera. This rumor should be viewed with some skepticism until confirmed.

LinX dual-lens technology offers several potential benefits for the
iPhone 7 Plus, with the rumor specifically pointing towards 2-3x optical
zoom capabilities, perhaps implemented through the use of two lenses
with different focal lengths. With a dual-lens camera system, images
captured are clearer and brighter with less noise and truer color,
allowing for pictures that include more detail, especially in low light
conditions.

An
example of LinX's noise reduction technology. Far more detail is
preserved in the LinX image on the right compared to the iPhone 5 image
on the left.
There's a possibility that a dual-lens system like the one LinX
created could be used for depth mapping, allowing users to do things
like take 3D scans of real world items or use depth information to
refocus an image. For additional information on what LinX technology
could mean for the iPhone 7, make sure to check out our in-depth LinX post.
Implementing LinX's camera system in the iPhone 7 Plus would potentially allow Apple to cut down on the size of the camera module, doing away with the protruding rear camera lens.
An example of how a dual-lens camera could potentially improve photos taken with the iPhone 7 Plus can be seen in the below video demonstration of similar technology from Corephotonics. Corephotonics' dual-lens system uses a wide-angle lens and a lens capable of 5X optical zoom and aggregates data from both to get a better picture.
As for the camera in the iPhone 7 and the rumored single-lens iPhone 7
Plus, there's no word on what improvements may be introduced. If a
version of the iPhone 7 Plus is set to see major gains in image quality,
it stands to reason the iPhone 7 and/or the standard-lens iPhone 7 Plus
will also see significant improvement, even if it is implemented
outside of a dual-lens system.
According to reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may be planning to introduce two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus -- one that includes a single-lens camera like the iPhone 7 and one that includes a dual-lens camera system. Dual-Lens Camera Details
Apple is rumored to be working on at least one version of the iPhone 7 Plus that includes a a 12-megapixel dual-lens camera system that takes advantage of technology Apple acquired through the purchase of Israeli camera company LinX Imaging last year. Image quality in the iPhone 7 Plus could be greatly improved with the introduction of a dual-lens system, narrowing the gap between photos taken with the iPhone and those taken with a more robust DSLR cameras.Implementing LinX's camera system in the iPhone 7 Plus would potentially allow Apple to cut down on the size of the camera module, doing away with the protruding rear camera lens.
RAM
According to another prediction from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus may have differing amounts of RAM. The smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 7 may ship with 2GB of RAM, while the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus may ship with 3GB RAM.Storage Space
Storage space may also be a differentiating factor between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. An unconfirmed rumor suggests the larger iPhone 7 Plus could include a high-end 256GB storage option that would not be available with the iPhone 7. 256GB is a capacity that is not offered in any of Apple's current iOS devices, so it is questionable as to whether Apple would introduce such a high-capacity iPhone. The rumor did not include a mention of other storage tiers that would be available for the two devices.Wireless Charging
With the Lightning port being used for music playback, there will be
no way to charge the iPhone 7 while headphones are plugged in, which has
sparked some speculation about wireless charging. According to one
rumor, Apple is exploring wireless charging technology that could potentially be included in the iPhone 7.
While Apple is said to be looking into wireless charging for the iPhone 7, there is no guarantee the feature will make it into the finished product. It is also not clear what method Apple would use to implement wireless charging.

Other Features
Apple may source some LTE modems
for the iPhone 7 from Intel, perhaps adopting the Intel 7360 LTE modem
and introducing faster LTE speeds on the device. The chip features
faster theoretical downlink speeds of up to 450 MB/s, uplink speeds of
up to 100 MB/s, and support for LTE category 10 and 29 bands.
Part Leaks
Our first look at a component that might be destined for the iPhone 7
came in January of 2016, with the leak of some photos that depict a
possible iPhone 7 backlight assembly.

We can't really glean any information about the iPhone 7 from the backlight component, but it is similar in design to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus backlight assembly with the exception of relocated LCD flex cables and 3D Touch chip. Though the backlight assembly doesn't give us any information about the iPhone 7, it suggests that components are now in production and additional part leaks will follow.

Beyond the iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 hasn't launched yet, but we're already hearing rumors
about iPhones that will be released in 2017 and beyond. Apple is said to
be working on flexible OLED displays for future versions of the iPhone,
at a secret lab it's opened in Taiwan. Apple is also developing more
advanced versions of liquid crystal displays, working on a technology
called Micro-LED.
Apple is also pursuing an OLED partnership with LG Display and Samsung, and is said to be close to a deal. Under the terms of the deal, LG Display and Samsung would both provide Apple with OLED displays for future devices. Japan Display is also hoping to secure a deal with Apple and has announced its own plans to begin developing OLED displays. Rumors also suggest Apple may also be planning to invest in AMOLED supplier AU Optronics as a source of displays for future iPhones, indicating Apple is pursuing multiple options for next-generation display technology.
Both OLED and Micro-LED technologies eliminate the need for the backlighting that's used in traditional LCDs, which would potentially allow Apple to cut down on the size of its iOS devices. Micro-LED suffers from low yields and OLED has a shorter life span, so they are both technologies that are not quite ready for near-future iPhone upgrades.
Rumors originally said Apple would introduce OLED displays in 2018, but its plans may have been pushed up. Apple may now be aiming to introduce the first OLED displays in iPhones at the end of 2017 instead of 2018.
Apple is said to be developing a next-generation version of 3D Touch, which would scale up for use in larger devices like the iPad Pro. Other benefits are not yet known.
In the future, Apple could introduce an iPhone without a home button, instead integrating Touch ID fingerprint recognition into the display of the device. Apple is working on developing touch and display driver integration (TTDI) chips, but it is not clear when that technology will be ready for use in an iPhone.
Apple is also rumored to be working on long-range wireless charging technology that could be implemented in phones as soon as 2017. Long-range wireless charging is superior to many existing wireless charging methods because it does not require devices to be as close to a charging source or mat.
There are some obstacles to overcome before such technology can be implemented, such as the loss of power transfer efficiency that occurs when the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is increased. This causes batteries further away from a charging source to charge more slowly.

Belgium terror attacks: EU Interior and Justice Ministers to meet in Brussels
on
19:53:00
European Union Interior and Justice Ministers will hold a crisis meeting today in Brussels following the militant attacks that killed 35 people in the Belgian capital. Netherlands, which currently holds the EU rotating presidency, announced this yesterday. The meeting is crucial amid news reports, which reveals that Islamic State has allegedly trained at least 400 fighters to target Europe in a series of terrorist attacks. Security officials said, the IS terrorist group has a number of semi-autonomous cells spread across Europe. The warning comes from a number of European and Iraqi intelligence officials, as well as a French lawmaker familiar with jihadi networks.
Meanwhile, Turkey said it had detained and then deported Ibrahim El Bakraoui, one of the two suicide bombers at Brussels airport. He accused the Belgian authorities of failing to confirm his links to terror. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday said Turkish authorities detained the attacker in June last year in Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border, and then deported the foreign terrorist fighter to the Netherlands at his request. An official informed that Belgian consular authorities were formally notified of his deportation on July 14, 2015, adding that he was then released by the Belgian authorities, without giving a timeframe.

US Providing Over $240m In Development Assistance In Northeast Nigeria
on
19:34:00
The United States says it is currently providing over $240M in development and humanitarian assistance through comprehensive programs in north eastern Nigeria and the broader Lake Chad Basin region.
This is according to the Director of the United States International Agency For Development (USAID) Mission in Nigeria, Michael Harvey, who is in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on an assessment tour.
He said the tour was to obtain first-hand information on the spending of sister donor agencies operating in war-torn northeast Nigeria and funded by USAID.
The insurgency problem in northeast Nigeria has forced millions of citizens out of their homes with school-age kids kept out of their classes, a situation that had made the USAID intensify its intervention programmes in the affected areas.
The Director of the USAID said the intervention programmes were targeted at Internally Displaced Persons in Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Yobe States.
USAID believes the task of addressing the many issues families in the displaced people’s camps as well as those in the host community are dealing with is overwhelming.
The victims of insurgency in Bakassi, originally from Gwoza Local Council in Borno State are the first to host the team.
They complained of poor living conditions and feeding, which they said had led to malnutrition and other illnesses.
“We need water and drugs and the weather is very harsh here because there are no trees. The sun disturbs us a lot,” one of the displaced persons, Hauwa Bello, told the group.
Part of the intervention plans of the USAID is to identify and empower displaced families preparing them for their return home.
The USAID also encouraged informal community schools assuring them of its willingness to partner with relevant authorities to give as many kids as possible unlimited access to education.
The region had seen over six years of insurgency and terror attacks mostly carried out by members of Boko Haram terrorist group.

US Election 2016: Clinton condemns Trump's plans for Nato
on
19:40:00
Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton rebuked Republicans and defended Nato in a counter-terrorism speech after deadly attacks in Brussels.
Her comments contrasted sharply with her Republican counterparts, namely Donald Trump, who has suggested scaling back US commitments to Nato.
Mrs Clinton said the US should consult more deeply with Arab partners and stand with Europe in its time of need.
"Our European allies stood with us on 9/11. It's time to return the favour."

"Our European allies stood with us on 9/11. It's time to return the favour."
America should not turn its back on its allies, she said during remarks at Stanford University in California, and insulting them is not a good way to fight terrorism.
She addressed Mr Trump's calls to reinstate the use of torture and water boarding to glean information from those accused of terrorism.
"I am proud to have been part of an administration that outlawed torture," the former secretary of state said.

The deadly attacks in Brussels that killed more than 30 people are the "latest brutal reminder" that more must be one to defeat to so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group, she said.
The US and Europe should take a "harder look" at airport security protocols, and other "soft targets" that IS may attack.
Mrs Clinton also said proposal in Congress to make a national commission on encryption could help fight online radicalisation.

PDP MLAs to meet in Srinagar today to discuss govt formation in J&K
on
19:51:00
In Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLAs will meet in Srinagar today to discuss the future course of action regarding the formation of a new government in the state. They will also deliberate upon the continuance of the PDP's alliance with BJP and PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. The PDP Chief called the legislature party meeting after her talks with Prime Minister. Soon after the meeting, Ms. Mufti had said that she would take a final decision regarding the government formation and PDP-BJP alliance after consulting her party MLAs. Describing her meeting with Mr Modi as positive, the PDP Chief had had expressed satisfaction about its outcome.

AIR correspondent reports, After Tuesday’s meeting, Mehbooba Mufti sought to give impression that Prime Minister cleared her dilemma over various issues confronting J&K. However, the criticism of the main opposition National Conference, Congress and other political parties charging PDP of backtracking and misleading people of the State, would hang on PDP’s mind before taking final call on the government formation. BJP said it was committed to the implementation of already agreed Agenda of Alliance. PDP is yet to come up with the reaction to the allegations of opposition parties. Mehbooba Mufti's predicament would be how it will explain its position on the issue of time bound implementation of State specific CBMs that it was talking for the past two and a half months before going ahead with the alliance with BJP.
State Governor NN Vohra has called separate meetings with PDP Chief and BJP State Unit President tomorrow.
Meanwhile, BJP has clarified that it has not accepted any new condition from PDP for the formation of a new government in the state. Talking to media persons in New Delhi, party General Secretary Ram Madhav said during her meeting with the Prime Minister, the PDP Chief did not raise any demand.

Nigeria exports 328,897mbs of crude in four years - NEITI
on
19:45:00
TVC NEWS (ABUJA) - The Federal Government of Nigeria exported a total of 328, 897 million barrels of crude oil in the last four years, the Nigerian Extractive Industrial Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said.
The agency, in a paper titled: ‘’NNPC offshore processing and swap arrangements: Revenue loss to the nation’’ obtained at the weekend, showed that the Federal Government allocated 655,235million barrels of crude during the period under review, of which it exported 328, 897 million barrels to generate revenues for the country.
The paper, which gives an account of the number of volumes of crude oil allocated per year, volumes delivered to the refineries for processing into petrol, kerosene, diesel and other finished products, volumes supplied for offshore processing, and those exchanged between Nigeria and her partners abroad, said the government supplied 134, 387 million barrels of crude oil to the refineries during the period.
In the paper presented by former NEITI Acting Executive Secretary, Dr Orji Ogbonaya Orji, the government allocated more crude oil for exports since it derives more than 70 per cent of its earnings from oil exports.
Giving a breakdown of crude oil dealings during the period under review, NEITI said the country allocated 161,914 million of crude oil in 2009; 166, 523millions in 2010; 164,455million in 2011; and 162,343millions in 2012.
It said the government exported 142, 500 million barrels of crude oil in 2009; 97, 792 million barrels in 2010; 39, 341 million barrels in 2011 and 49, 215 million barrels in 2012.
The paper said the government delivered 19, 363 million barrels to the refineries in 2009; 34, 703 million barrels in 2010; 48, 394 million barrels in 2011 and 34, 927 million barrels in 2012.
Others include crude oil offshore processing-27,556 million barrels of crude oil in 2010; 26, 688 million barrels of crude oil 2011; and 22, 755 million barrels of crude oil in 2012.
Also, the paper recalled that the idea of swapping crude oil for refined products began in the mid 80s, adding that the idea was introduced to enable NNPC access funds to meet its obligations in the Joint Venture Agreements (JVAs)
