WHAT IS IN BEER???

All I see around me are beer drinkers who wobble around on their feet carrying evidences of robust health in their large bellies. These, I understand, are called beer bellies. Now, I tell myself, these bellies must be bursting from pure health
This week, reader, we are going to take our minds off our many national and international problems. I definitely do not want to remind you about the odour oozing from the lower house of the national assembly regarding allegations of budget padding. No, I don’t think you need any reminder either of how the dollar is climbing steadily on the ladder of success in Nigeria while the Naira is crashing, just as, of course, is the worth of my salary. These days, I find that earning more does not necessarily translate to more wealth for me.
This week, I say, we going for something much more exhilarating. We are pushing aside everything related to politics and economy because, man, this is one depressing family! We are going to talk about beer, today being beer day and all! So please, I beg you, don’t change the page. Just sit tight and read on. Let us both agree to be pleasantly distracted this week.
Let me start by making it very clear and loud that I do not drink beer and I am not necessarily proud of this fact. Like someone said, I am a hypocrite, but I am not proud of it. In other words, I envy those who drink it, socially of course. Certainly, I am not talking about those who make beer their lives. To such a one, I have only one piece of advice: Get yourself a life!
So, here, I am addressing those who have lives but take THE BEER just to keep their social images and their friends. To start with, I had no idea that up to a staggering three (3) billion bottles of beer are drunk on these Nigerian shores every year. Imagine, such a large party has been going on behind my back and I had no knowledge of it! Come on, people, you think that is fair?! I am not invited to that party; and I have been left to pick up the bottles in this YEAR OF THE BEER!
Let’s see how. That number, I am told, amounts to N600b of sales for the beer manufacturing companies. And those companies did not even stretch out a bottle to me and did they even think to share the profits with me. The question that the writer of that text message asked himself was who drank it, considering this is a nation of religionists. But that is not my problem. I have no cares about who drank or who did not drink what. My own questions are two: under what rock was I living when all these cheers were being distributed; and what does the average social drinker see in beer? In short, what’s in a beer?
The reason I do not drink beer is simple. I cannot abide the smell. However, from the figures quoted, I can certainly believe that the smell is not many people’s problem. Either that or their gazes are too trained on the cheer coming out of the cup for them to mind the smell. Whichever one it is, one thing is clear. This is officially a nation of beer drinkers, churches or mosques notwithstanding.
I giggle when I hear many people say that they do not take alcohol. They cannot stand alcohol. They are too pure to even smell alcohol. But, I assure you that is not my own problem. I think purity abandoned me a long time ago. That’s how I got the laughter to share with you, dear reader. Like someone said of a priest, he’s redeemed by his vices. Anyway, to those who say they do not take alcohol, I say welcome to the fold of The Purists. They can generally be found on the balcony of Life, looking down on the rest of us, for they do not take so much as cough mixtures.
Anyway, I will not try to answer that million dollar question about who dunnit posed by the writer of the text I referred to earlier. You can never know who drinks N600b worth of beer each year, mostly because you cannot see anyone do it. Many of the drinkers wait for the cover of dusk to do it. You see, they need all the peace and quiet for it.
My own second question is easily disposed of. I have been living in that seventies rock. It’s a place where you hear, see and know nothing else because the national corruption and economy have blocked your senses until you know nothing else. Now, let’s go to my first question.
As I was writing this, reader, an unbelievable message came in that listed all the things husbands have to do and be in order to keep their wives happy. The list includes more than sixty items. To make a man happy, on the other hand, there was a list of only three items: his TV, his phone and his beer. Hmmn!
This reminds me of the story of a man who was brought before a judge for being drunk. Oh, I’ve told you before? Good, you’ll hear it again. Well, asked the judge, why were you drunk? The man replied that he had been contracted by a woman to build a new henhouse from the materials of an old one but not to tear down the old one until he had finished the new. After listening to this, the judge was said to have dismissed the charges in sympathy. From that I got the idea that beer is supposed to contain some kind of stupid intelligence. I don’t think though that the man built the new henhouse. Now, I wonder why.
I really don’t know what it is in beer that makes it attract so many devotees to itself. I tell you, it’s almost another religion. Listen, some preacher somewhere announced that his chair had been taken away by someone. He then pleaded that they should please return it to him. That chair, said he, is what he sits on at the end of the day when he wants to take his beer. This was to impress upon his listeners what the chair meant to him.
I read in a report sometime back that beer is supposed to have some properties that prolong life. Seriously!; I thought that study had been contracted by someone deep in his cups. All I see around me are beer drinkers who waddle around on their feet carrying evidences of robust health in their rotund bellies. These, I understand, are called beer bellies. Now, I tell myself, these bellies must be bursting from pure health.
I have often looked with a kind of longing envy at men tired out from the day’s struggles, all sweaty and gloomy, faces longer than the rainbow drawn from one end of the sky to another. However, when the said faces light on a chilled can of beer even more sweaty than they are, they get transformed to one beatific look that resembles the type many of us have reserved for the second coming. I believe I hear their hearts racing and see the mouths drooling as the swoosh of can opening brings out the foamy substance. I am thinking: only in beer is there such worship of stupidity; such unholy communion!
So, I guess we’ll never know what’s in a beer, but I know it’s something the men, and a few women too, have pulled to their corner, leaving the rest of us wondering. Might it just contain a tad of intelligence, cheer, stupidity, escape, or the touching of tomorrow’s hope? I guess we’ll never know. There’s too much swoosh going on around us, 3b. Now, let’s go face that dollar exchange problem again.

Breast feeding save babies from death

The Kebbi State EU- UNICEF C4D Consultant, Mr Idris Nagia, has called for improved awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding. Briefing reporters in his office, Nagia said breastfeeding can reduce the death of children under five, adding that only 36 per cent of infants less than six months old are exclusively breastfed in the state.
“With so much at stake, we need to do more to reach women with a simple, powerful messages like: Breastfeeding can save your baby’s life,”.  Also,   “no other preventive intervention is more cost effective in reducing the number of children who die before reaching their fifth birthdays.”
He called for more advocates  to be cultivated, using new and creative ways to communicate with mothers and families.  “Raising awareness beyond the confines of the maternity ward is critical to reach these broader audiences,” he said.
According to him, “initiation of breastfeeding within 30 minu-tes after birth saves mothers from the risk of  maternal death and exclusive breastfeeding on demand in the first six months of life without water or any other food will start every baby on healthy path in life, providing all the nutrients the baby requires for optimum growth and development’’.
He added that UNICEF has   embraced the idea of using all means of communication and encourages others to do same by using the opportunity of World Breastfeeding Week to trigger action through out the year.   He said this year’s world brest feeding  day has  emphasised the role that every member of society can play to raise awareness about breast-feeding – a natural and best way of feeding babies.

Dream Team VI failed to reach the final of the men’s football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics following a 0-2 lost to Germany

Dream Team VI  failed to reach the final of the men’s football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics following a 0-2 lost to Germany inside the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The Europeans scored within the first ten minutes of play courtesy Lukas Klostermann, who rolled Captain Max Meyer’s incisive pass into the net with Emmanuel Daniel completely helpless and killed off the game with a late strike from substitute Nils Petersen.
Samson Siasia was forced to make changes to his side as Ndifreke Udo   replaced suspended midfielder Okechukwu Azubuike, while Aminu Umar continued in the place of topscorer Oghenekaro Etebo who was only fit enough for the bench as he failed to recover on time from injury.
The absence of the duo was evident in theDream Team VI play as they conceded possession easily to their opponents and it was no surprise when they fell behind early on.
Nigeria had a perfect chance to level scores when the German goalkeeper Timo Horn miss-timed his clearance into the path of Roma forward Sadiq Umar but the striker failed to punish the Germans as his shot was blocked twice before Horn recovered and made a sprawling save.
The Germans created half chances as they tore the Nigerian defence open but it was the Dream Team VI that looked good to score when Captain Mikel Obi dribbled two defenders but the third made a fantastic block as he pulled the trigger.
Nigeria ended the first half as the stronger side with Aminu toe poking an effort towards goal after receiving a neat through pass from striker partner Sadiq but Matthias Ginter produced an exceptional tackle to send the ball for a corner.
The second half was dominated by the Germans as they looked to extend their lead.
Arsenal flying winger Serge Gnabry who picked up a yellow in the first half produced a fine individual moment as he cut inside Shehu before releasing a shot that Emmanuel Daniel parried for a corner.
Mikel Obi hit the side netting from a freekick as Nigeria pressed for the equaliser. Sadiq Umar was replaced by Junior Ajayi while Saliu Popoola came on for Udo Ndifreke.

Ruggedman and 9ice back together with Religion

Two of Nigeria’s frontline hip musicians – 9ice and Ruggedman – over the weekend came out with a new song titled Religion.
Rich with lyrical delivery style of Yoruba proverbs by 9ice (Abolore Akande) and rap by Ruggedman (Michael Stevens), the duo sing about how they charted the face of hip hop by infusing indigenous languages and slangs.
“Street ti take over, Yeah, we know we would” rapped Ruggedman on the song. And in what seems like a prophesy, Ruggedman said the Nigerian music industry has blossomed beyond continental imagination.
“Ruggedman and 9ice making history. You never saw this coming but it is here.”
The song which has been enjoying massive downloads via the internet and airplay on radio was produced by KrizBeatz and mastered by Marqi.
The two artistes had first collaborated on Ruggedman’s track, RuggedyBaba in 2009 in which Ruggedman rapped passionately on the essence of rapping and singing in pidgin English as well as in the various mother tongues.
“From Nigeria, the world only know juju, fuji and afrobeats but we all know hip hop is running the streets,” Ruggedman had rapped on the track.
“Wetin go make them know where your music dey come from in the long run na the fusion of music, grammar, slang and your mother tongue.”
9ice, who had rocked the Nigerian hip hop scene with Gongo Aso had referred to Ruggedman asOpomulero which translated from Yoruba means ‘mainframe’ in English.
And in 2010, Ruggedman and 9ice were engaged in a public feud when it was reported that 9ice accused Ruggedman of sleeping with 9ice’s ex-wife Toni Payne while they were still married.
However, six years later, 9ice apologised to Ruggedman. And the two frontline Nigerian hip hop musicians with the release of the joint single seemed to have effectively put the past behind them

Man arrested at sango-ota for naming his pet Buhari

30-year-old trader has been arrested by the police in Ogun state for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari.’ The trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, of No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested last weekend, after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari. Vanguard learned that the complainant reported the case at Sango Police Station, last Saturday, after which the trader was arrested and detained. However, it was gathered that efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed following a clever move by the suspect. The trader, said to be trading in female wears at a popular market in Sango, allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog and possibly eat the meat in order to avoid being implicated. It was gathered that consistent appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail. Trader denied bail The case, however, took a different dimension two days later when Chinakwe’s relatives went to Sango police station to further plead for his bail only to be informed that the case file and the suspect have been transferred to Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran. A relation to the suspect, who simply identified himself as Chiedozie, told Vanguard that his brother was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail. Chiedozie said: “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari.  Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up.

The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.” Police sources, however, told Vanguard that the actions of the suspect “were very provocative.” The source said: “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.” As at press time, relations to the suspect were still making frantic efforts to effect his bail while his accusers are insisting that he must be prosecuted. Police confirms arrest When contacted around 8pm yesterday, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details. Oyeyemi later called, stating that: “I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” Continuing, he said: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.” When asked about the whereabouts of the dog that will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police spokesman said: “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it.”

OUR ATTITUDE TO LIFE AND SECURITY

Many are quick to put the blame about security problems on the state of the Police and Policing in Nigeria. Attitude they say is everything. Our attitude to life and security as a people is nothing to write home about. Our actions and inactions show how much we value human life. When ten people die as a result of an accident or ailment, it makes headlines abroad but may not disturb many minds here. Some had attributed this to our value system as a people; we do attach little or nothing to human life.

In my piece “The irony of befitting burials” I tried to paint the picture of how much value we attach to burial ceremonies but not to the wellbeing of people. The attitude of many is like that of Cain (AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?). When armed robbers visited our apartment not long ago, some of our neighbours were hearing their loud voices but none had the courage to alert the Police. Some were too afraid to alert the Police, while others may have felt less concerned because theirs were not penetrable or accessible to the robbers.

On our roads you will always see this attitude on display. Truck drivers do not seem to want to see any other vehicle on their path. The bus drivers, cab drivers, and private car drivers see motorcycles riders and the tricycle drivers as aliens on the road. The pedestrians are at the mercy of all. Some drivers do not display expertise but drive like they manufactured those vehicles; many would tell you how many years they have been on the wheels before your birth. You will always see pedestrians and drivers, or drivers and riders shouting or hauling all manners of weapons at each other on our roads or at the bus stops.

Many had attributed these to impatience. Our impatience can also be attributed to our attitude to time and life. We do not seem to like early preparations, we prefer to rush and make haste at the very last minute. Our fire brigade attitude is seen in all aspects of our life. Even when Africa had not manufactured a wristwatch or clock we prefer using ‘African Time’. People do not move out early to catch appointments, but try to rush their way down few minutes before the time and become part of the menace on the road. People can afford to programme themselves where there are different and functional transport system, but not here where bad roads, traffic and human factors cannot allow such. We therefore need to be time conscious and leave home early enough.

Is it the sole responsibility of the Police to secure lives and property in our nation? I do not think so. Borrowing the lines of Mr. Ben OkeziePolice no be spirit”. Most things that happened did happen in the midst of people. But the people that were around the scene of those events would never bother to alert the Police. You might see robbers attacking somebody on the road but it is nobody’s business. Even when those people shout for help, help may not come because no one cares. Many robbery incidents would have been taken care of if the people around dared to alert the police or even raised alarm. Many would not even look in the direction of the incident for fear of being called to testify or give the police necessary information needed for proper investigation.

We may have to complain to God and to the gods about the Police and policing when we are not ready to do our part in the security of lives and property. Gone are the days when people knew their neighbours and kept eyes on their children and property. Nowadays, adults do not bother about children on the roads and their safety because they are not theirs. The spate of kidnapping in the land would not have been if we were our brother’s keeper. Most strange movements would have been noticed and tracked if we were security conscious and cared about the man next door. Even though I advocate community policing and Police living with the people, we can be eyes and ears to the Police.

If we must have GOOD POLICE SERVICE, we must also have GOOD PEOPLE’S CO-OPERATION. For us to have a people friendly Police, we may need to have a Police friendly people. Since attitude is everything we need a change of attitude to the security of lives and property. We must learn to watch our brother’s back and be more willing to give the Police alerts and necessary information to be able to arrest certain situations. May I also suggest that the authorities concerned consider changing from Nigeria Police Force to Nigeria Police Service. The Ministry in-charge of National Orientation should also look in the direction of enlightening the people about being police friendly, being their neighbour’s keeper, and releasing necessary information to the Police to help unravel criminal activities in the land. The Police authorities would also need training and re-training of security agents about their attitude to life, arms and avoidance of extrajudicial killings. People who volunteer to give information about criminal activities should not be made to look like they committed a crime by informing the Police. The Police authorities should make sure their Public Relations Officers do not insult the people’s intelligence by their defense of officers’ misdemeanor. Change?  Yes, we can!

How to Detect a Phishing Email: An Example

Some of my important emails end up in the Spam folder due to incorrect filtering. So, I occasionally check the Spam folder to see if an email that was not spam ended up there. Today, while checking the Spam folder, I came across an email that was a classic example of a phishing message. Hence, I decided to share it here to point out some common tactics used in such messages.

Here is the email:-

One look at the from address should be enough for anyone to judge that this message is not genuine. Messages from most companies are through a no-reply address. Also, most companies contact you from an  email address that is on their main domain, not some random free email provider. Moreover, almost all email providers use an interstitial page in the situation described in this message. None of them sends an email asking for verification.

Another important thing to notice in this message is the Sent to: field. Notice how it mentions undisclosed recipients. This is common in such messages. They are sent to a lot of email ids in one go. Hence, hiding the recipients allows hackers to prevent their targets from knowing that this same message has been sent to a lot of users.

The next thing to notice is that this message does not address me by name. This is uncommon for an email company that already has your name. Most companies add the user's name to add a personalized feeling to their messages. This is something that is quite difficult to manage if you are sending the same message to thousands of users.

One of the most common feature of phishing emails is their use of incorrect grammar. This message is no different. The inappropriate capitalization and spelling mistakes like writing the word 'loosing' in place of 'losing' leaves no doubt about its authenticity.

One more important thing to notice is that at the end of this message, there is no mention of the email provider's website. This is very uncommon considering that most email providers leave no stone unturned to brand their messages.

Lastly, the email address to reply to is different from the one with which this message was sent. A proof that the sender of this message tried to spoof the sender id.

The techniques used in this email were typical and hence it should not be difficult for anyone to detect that it is a phishing message. However, cyber criminals are evolving and most of them don't make such common mistakes anymore. You should always use common sense in such situations and never click on suspicious links.

The important things in life

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”
“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”
“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.”
“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

How to Access Blocked Websites, View Restricted Sites

Most of us find ourselves in situations where a website we wish to visit is blocked by a software or by our ISP (Internet Service Provider). So the question arises, how can we access blocked websites? The answer to this is simple: Proxy websites. Before going into details, let us know a bit about these proxy websites.

Proxy Websites

A proxy website acts as an intermediate source between the user and server the site being contacted is hosted on. Users send requests to proxy websites which conveys them to the site's server. The reply received by the proxy website is then forwarded to the user's computer. This gives an impression to ISP's and blocking software that the user is visiting the proxy website but in reality, s/he is visiting the site which was blocked. Thus, proxy servers also provide extra security to users by hiding their online activities from their ISP's.

Commonly Blocked Web Sites

The sites which are most commonly blocked at workplaces, schools and offices include websites like Facebook, Orkut, Blogger (blogspot), Google News, Typepad, eBay, MySpace, YouTube, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, Bebo, Google Talk, Gmail, Photobucket, AOL AIM, Flickr, Twitter etc. In some countries, social bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit are also blocked. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, China have even blocked access to mainstream media websites like The New York times. A proxy website can be used to easily access these blocked websites. As proxy websites hide a user's location, they can also be used to access popular websites which are restricted to particular countries and block users from other countries from visiting them.

Types of Proxies

There are two types of proxies. First, there are web proxies which have an interactive interface; and second, the proxy servers which work on the basis of IP Addresses and port numbers. Proxies can also be segregated on the basis of anonymity into Anonymous, Transparent and High Anonymous depending upon the amount of privacy they provide.

How to Find Proxy Websites and Proxy Servers

A simple Google search containing the word "proxy websites" is likely to return a lot of useful results. However, most of them are likely to be lists containing proxy servers which you can setup using their IP Address and Port Number. So, in order to find interactive proxy websites, you will have to search for something like "Facebook Proxy Server" or "Twitter Proxy Server". A search like this is most likely to return interactive proxy websites with which you can access your blocked website by simply entering the URL in URL field. If you want additional security and anonymity, you can opt for a paid proxy server.

If you do not want to search, here are few popular free proxy websites you can use:-
  1. http://www.spysurfing.com/
